PHOENIX — In recognition of the company’s 50 years as a full truckload carrier, Swift Transportation Co. has launched Edge, a proprietary leadership development program designed to incubate Swift leaders.
EDGE — which stands for education, discipline, guidance, experience — is an intensive, 18-month program that provides individuals with the curriculum and practical use needed to succeed in the trucking industry, according to a Swift news release.
“When it comes to leadership, most individuals come into a role with experience, but no practical leadership training, setting them up to fail in a position where they should flourish,” said Becky Tooley, director of leadership and organizational performance. “Edge gives our leaders the toolkit they need to enhance their skills and positively impact our drivers across the country.”
Combined with practical application, Edge provides educational sessions from leaders in executive development on motivation, leadership, communication, culture, and strategic thinking, Tooley said, adding that by investing in its leaders, Swift plans to cultivate coaches, decision-makers, negotiators, communicators, and thinkers, continuing its legacy as an industry leader.
“Great leaders produce great teams, which achieve great business results,” said Pat Ahern, vice president learning and development, whose department created the Edge program. “Edge provides a hands-on, action-oriented and feedback-based leadership development program that will empower our driver support employees to become more effective leaders.”
Swift Transportation was founded and is based in Phoenix. Swift operates a tractor fleet of approximately 18,000 units driven by company and owner-operator drivers. The company operates more than 40 major terminals positioned near major freight centers and traffic lanes in the United States and Mexico.
