PALO ALTO, Calif. — An electric cargo truck is set to be unveiled by Palo Alto, California-based Tesla Inc. in September, but there was no word on when the truck might be available for sale, news sources reported Thursday.

Tesla also has a sedan and a pickup truck planned and CEO Elon Musk said heavy-duty trucks are among the types of electric vehicles needed in the marketplace, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Musk reportedly said the planned electric “semi” will reduce transportation costs, increase safety and be fun to drive.

The Tesla truck joins Mercedes-Benz’s Urban eTruck released last year, Nikola Motor Company’s hydrogen fuel cell truck announced in December and Uber Technologies’ Otto division’s development of a self-driving truck which made a run hauling beer last fall.
