OLYMPIA, Wash. — Beginning May 20, drivers in Washington State can stop by select rest areas in fact, for a free cup of coffee through the Washington State Department of Transportation’s (WSDOT) rest area free coffee program.
The program, which was created to help combat drowsy driving and is staffed by volunteers, is returning after a two-year hiatus imposed by COVID-19 restrictions. Volunteers from nonprofit groups around the state dispense complimentary coffee at 34 safety rest areas operated by WSDOT.
In addition to getting a cup of coffee, travelers get a chance to learn more about these local volunteer groups, and they can make voluntary donations for the coffee.
Not every designation location will have coffee service available every day; the service depends on the availability of volunteer groups. Travelers should watch for signs posted near the rest areas indicating that free coffee is available.
