Ryder System expands cross-border footprint in U.S. and Mexico

MIAMI — Ryder System, Inc. recently announced the opening of its newest logistics operation in Laredo, Texas, and the expansion of its drayage yard in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. The newly built 228,000-square-foot Laredo multi-client warehouse and cross-dock was strategically built a short distance from the U.S.-Mexico border’s World Trade Bridge, giving truckers and motorists easy access to the facility from both sides of the interstate. The facility also includes 102 dock doors and room for 143 trailers, and it’s within a six-mile radius of Ryder’s other operations in Laredo, which allows for overflow and pooling of labor and resources for added flexibility, according to a news release. “If you look at the market, truck border crossing activity between the U.S. and Mexico is up more than 20% annually since the pandemic, as more businesses look to nearshoring to diversify their supply chains and shorten lead times,” said Ricardo Alvarez, vice president of supply chain operations for Ryder Mexico. “The savings from manufacturing overseas can be offset by inventory sitting on ships or in seaports incurring storage fees and, of course, by the product being unavailable to meet demand. With Mexico, you put what you need on a truck and it can be in a final-mile distribution center within days, not months.” Ryder’s Mexico location manages nearly 250,000 freight movements across the Mexican border each year and supports customers in the automotive, industrial, technology and consumer packaged goods industries. The company also operates 5 million square feet of multi-client, dedicated warehouse and yard space across Mexico. “While we specialize in fully integrated port-to-door supply chain solutions, our new multi-client warehouse in Laredo is also a good entry point for customers looking for a logistics provider that can help them scale,” said Frank Bateman, vice president of supply chain operations for Ryder. “As our customers’ needs evolve, we can seamlessly transition them into dedicated warehouses and offer a flexible mix of transportation solutions, including integrated dedicated fleets with professional drivers. And, we can provide real-time visibility and collaboration with RyderShareTM technology, so our customers can easily see across their supply chains and take action to avoid costly delays, find efficiency gains, and ultimately, improve resiliency.”

Wisconsin legislature passes ‘commonsense’ litigation reform

WASHINGTON — The American Trucking Associations (ATA) on Feb. 23 praised the Wisconsin State Legislature for passing what the association describes as “a commonsense reform” to the state’s civil litigation system. Wisconsin’s S.B. 613 would cap noneconomic damage awards at $1 million. According to a statement from the ATA, the trucking industry believes capping these subjective, nonmonetary losses is critical to ensuring fairness and balance in civil litigation and will deter abusive and frivolous lawsuits that have perverted the system into a profit center for the plaintiffs’ bar. “When the plaintiffs’ bar perverts civil litigation into a casino game of ‘jackpot justice,’ the costs are borne by everyone — not just trucking companies, but consumers too, in the form of higher insurance rates and higher prices for everyday goods,” said ATA President and CEO Chris Spear. “This reasonable reform ensures justice and fairness drive accident litigation outcomes, not profits.” The legislation passed the State Assembly by voice vote and passed the State Senate 21-11; it now goes to Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers’ desk for signing. “This legislation has broad support in the state legislature and across the state,” said Wisconsin Motor Carriers Association President Neal Kedzie. “Wisconsin’s trucking industry is essential to everyone in our state, and rampant lawsuit abuse is impeding our ability to do our job safely and efficiently. We urge Gov. Evers to sign this bill into law.”

Iowa State Patrol warns drivers of the dangers of driving while fatigued

BRANDON, Iowa — Driving while fatigued can have catastrophic consequences, the Iowa State Patrol Commercial Vehicle Unit warned drivers via social media posts on Friday, Feb. 23. The posts appeared following the unit’s response to a crash involving a tractor-trailer on Interstate 380 in Buchanan County at mile marker 49. “Amazingly nobody was hurt in this crash on I-380 recently. It is, however, an important reminder for everyone that driving while fatigued can be just as dangerous as driving while impaired!” the post read.

Kentucky Teamsters demand that senators vote against driverless truck bill

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Teamsters, firefighters, police officers, other union members and elected officials gathered Feb. 22 at the Kentucky Capitol in Frankfort to demand that senators vote against House Bill 7. According to a statement released by the Teamsters, the legislation would legalize driverless trucks in the state with little to no oversight. “We cannot let California’s Big Tech write laws for our state. Lawmakers need to pass legislation that’s by and for Kentucky residents,” said Teamsters General Secretary-Treasurer Fred Zuckerman. “Senators need to preserve good union jobs, safe streets, and the will of the people by stopping this bill dead in its tracks.” The Teamsters’ statement said that safety problems are widespread in states that allow driverless vehicles, citing several incidents in which driverless taxis struck pedestrians, bicyclists and other vehicles. In October 2023, a Cruise robotaxi ran over a pedestrian and dragged her 20 feet; then, just this month, vehicles operated by Cruise nearly collided with children in two separate incidents, the statement noted. Also this month, a Waymo robotaxi hit a cyclist in San Franciso and two Waymo robotaxis crashed into the same truck just minutes apart. As a result of these accidents, the statement said, Cruise is being investigated by the U.S. Department of Justice and Waymo has issued a software recall. “Driverless trucks are a danger to highway safety and good jobs in Kentucky. These companies only care about profit and not the safety of our roads or the thousands of jobs that will be put at risk by this unproven technology,” said Avral Thompson, Teamsters Central Region International Vice President and President of Teamsters Local 89. “Our elected leaders must listen to the workers of this state — not the corporations — and vote no on HB 7.” According to the Teamsters’ statement, polling shows more than four out of five Kentucky voters would be less likely to support their legislature if they voted to allow driverless cars and trucks on Kentucky roads, and they were concerned that driverless vehicles are a threat to replacing workers’ jobs. “Many drivers across Kentucky have good-paying union jobs and contracts that have been hard-fought over many years,” said John Stovall, President of Teamsters Joint Council 94. “If automation in other sectors of the economy has demonstrated anything, it’s that the jobs that replace those lost to automation are low-wage, exploitative, and nowhere close to being middle class. Artificial intelligence needs to be introduced in a way that benefits everyone in society — not just the billionaires.”

Modern Transportation shifts all 20 terminals to BeyondTrucks TMS

SAN MATEO, Calif. — BeyondTrucks, a multi-tenant SaaS transportation management system provider, announced Feb. 21 that bulk transportation services provider Modern Transportation will replace its current on-premise Transportation Management System (TMS) with the BeyondTrucks platform across its nationwide fleet at all 20 terminals. The move is part of Modern Transportation’s commitment to innovating the services it provides to chemical, building materials and packaging manufacturers in the bulk transportation segment. “We want to be known for implementing cutting-edge supply chain solutions that work successfully in mission-critical production environments,” said Patrick Cozzens, owner and president of Modern Transportation. “To achieve this, we need partners that share our commitment. BeyondTrucks definitely fits that criterion and meets those needs,” he continued. “With this change, Modern Transportation can be one of the most innovative bulk carriers in North America as it helps cement our advantage in efficiency, customer service and safety.” BeyondTrucks offers a flexible multi-tenant SaaS solution that combines system integrations, proprietary modules and adaptable configurations in a seamless platform to unify data and workflows for automation and optimization of fleet operations. Advanced capabilities of the multi-tenant cloud-based platform include order intake automation, smart load planning, dispatch communication, configurable driver workflows, flexible automation of invoicing and driver payroll. “For Modern Transportation, a legacy TMS struggled to cost-efficiently and seamlessly connect the various technologies the carrier needs to efficiently run its fleet,” said Hans Galland, CEO of BeyondTrucks. “Changing from one TMS is not an easy decision, but we know Modern Transportation can leverage BeyondTrucks to realize tremendous value for their business and their bulk transportation customers.”

Indiana cops find more than 180 pounds of cocaine hidden in onion shipment

GREENFIELD, Ind. — On Feb. 18, An Indiana State Trooper seized more than 180 pounds of a substance believed to be cocaine from a tractor-trailer during a roadside inspection along Interstate 70 near Mount Comfort Road. The trooper, who is certified to perform Federal Motor Carrier Inspections on commercial vehicles, was patrolling when the tractor-trailer caught his attention. The trooper pulled the truck over for inspection, and a review of the required paperwork and log book revealed a log book violation. According to a statement released by the Indiana State Police (ISP), while interacting with the driver and co-driver, the trooper noticed “criminal indicators” and asked for consent to search the semi, which was granted. During the search, the trooper discovered dozens of packages he suspected to be cocaine hidden inside boxes of onions and other produce; a field test later confirmed the trooper’s suspicion. The driver of the semi and the passenger were both arrested and transported to the Hancock County Jail on probable cause of possession of cocaine. The Hancock County Prosecutor’s office has reviewed the case and subsequently filed formal charges against both individuals in Hancock Superior Court. Jose N. Perez, 66, and Miguel Rodriguez, 60, both of California, are facing charges of dealing cocaine and possession of cocaine. The ISP were assisted by the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office on this investigation and worked closely with the Hancock County Prosecutor for charges. The truck was towed to Johnson’s Towing in Greenfield to be offloaded for completion of the search, which yielded 184 pound of a controlled substance. “I am grateful for the effort and cooperation of all involved that has provided us with the evidence to bring these charges,” said Hancock County Prosecutor Brent Eaton. “This is a great example of the type of alert police work and interagency cooperation that keeps our community among the nation’s safest.”

JB Hunt to acquire Walmart’s intermodal assets

LOWELL, Ark. — J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. announced Feb. 22 that it has entered into a multi-year intermodal service agreement with Walmart. As part of the agreement, J.B. Hunt Transport will purchase Walmart’s intermodal assets, including its intermodal container and chassis fleets. A statement released by J.B. Hunt notes that the agreement increases both companies’ current volume and capacity commitments and enables the development of comprehensive intermodal solutions to drive long-term value for both organizations. The statement did not disclose the length and price of the deal. J.B. Hunt leaders note that the two companies have worked closely for decades. “Mr. Hunt always said, ‘Good partners attract good partners,’” said Spencer Frazier, executive vice president of sales and marketing at J.B. Hunt. “(This) announcement is a testament to the mutual trust and shared vision our companies have developed over time, and innovative arrangements like this demonstrate J.B. Hunt’s disciplined approach to strategically allocating capital to advance our mission of driving long-term value for our people, customers and shareholders.” Fernando Cortez, senior vice president of transportation at Walmart says customer service is an important priority for the company. “Walmart’s long history of working with J.B. Hunt has many milestones of innovation and growth,” he said. “This agreement will strengthen our commitment to delivering goods at an everyday low cost to our customers and members.” J.B. Hunt operates one of the largest company-owned intermodal fleets in the world, specializing in domestic and international freight movement. According to the company’s Feb. 22 statement, converting over-the-road shipments to intermodal can reduce a shipment’s carbon footprint by an average of 60%. In 2023, J.B. Hunt and long-time joint service provider BNSF Railway launched Quantum, an intermodal service to convert service-sensitive highway freight to intermodal. The two also created a new service option to support cross-border freight movement to and from Mexico with coast-to-coast access in the U.S.

USDOT vows to continue drive to prevent death on nation’s roads

WASHINGTON — State governors gathered at the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) headquarters in Washington Feb. 21 to show support for the department’s National Roadway Safety Strategy (NRSS) and encourage action towards safer roads for all. The event included an overview of data, personal stories, and examples of innovative steps states are taking toward zero roadway fatalities. During the event, the DOT released the 2024 NRSS Report; the original NRSS was released in January 2022. The DOT also announced the addition of 41 new “Allies in Action” — businesses and organizations across the nation that are working to support the NRSS in reversing the crisis on America’s roads. In the program’s two years of operation, the USDOT has received a total of 160 commitments. “In the two years since we launched the National Roadway Safety Strategy, the Biden-Harris administration has taken action to make roads safer, emergency responders more efficient, and vehicle safety technology stronger, contributing to six straight quarters of decreasing traffic deaths—but America still loses tens of thousands of lives on our roads every year, and we must do more,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. “The updates we’re announcing today show that progress is possible, and we continue our call to action for all Americans to join with us and the partners who have already stepped up to save lives on our roadways.” The report provides an update on the USDOT’s efforts to address severe and fatal injuries on America’s roadways, details the department’s accomplishments related to addressing the NRSS actions in 2023 and identifies four new commitments to actions under the NRSS in calendar year 2024 and beyond. The most significant actions in 2023 include: Awarded $1.7 billion in funding to improve roadway safety at the local, regional and tribal levels through the Safe Streets and Roads for All discretionary grant program. Over 1,000 communities received funding, representing close to 70% of all Americans. Accelerated the deployment of new motor vehicle safety technologies through rulemaking for automatic emergency braking on all new passenger vehicles and heavy vehicles such as commercial trucks. Initiated an advance notice of proposed rulemaking for impaired-driving prevention technology standards to inform requirements that will deter behaviors such as alcohol-impaired driving. Updated key road safety regulations such as the new edition of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, and revised guidance to encourage states using federal-aid funds to use repaving and rehabilitation projects to improve safety for all road users. Expanded the use and support of the National Emergency Medical Services Information System by accepting data from all 50 states, two territories and the District of Columbia. Of the additional 41 supporters, 36 came from state and territory organizations, including transportation agencies and state highway safety offices. State agencies and offices, along with all Allies in Action, have committed to taking specific and tangible steps to actively reduce the number of deaths and severe injuries on America’s roads and streets. To achieve this, the plan is to expand the adoption of a Safe System Approach and a Zero Fatalities vision nationwide and transform how the nation thinks about road safety. Allies in Action spans multiple sectors, including health and safety advocates, the private sector, municipal and law enforcement organizations, and more. “The department won’t achieve zero deaths on our roadways alone, which is why involving stakeholders across the country, at every level of government, philanthropy, advocacy, and the private sector, is key,” said U.S. Transportation Deputy Secretary Polly Trottenberg. “The National Roadway Safety strategy is driving a cultural shift that treats roadway deaths as unacceptable and preventable. We have an incredible opportunity with President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which allows us to make a generational investment in America’s transportation network.” New voluntary commitments from Allies in Action include: 36 total state and territory submissions from their transportation agencies and highway safety offices will implement proven safety countermeasures, Complete Streets policies and plans, revisit policies around speed setting, and advance infrastructure improvements for vulnerable road users. Many states discussed a commitment to work zone and rural road safety enhancements as well as emergency notifications to alert roadway users of significant incidents and weather. States have also committed to engaging stakeholders to identify community highway safety concerns and solicit input on potential solutions, pursue cutting-edge data analytics that utilizes historical crash data, enforcement data, and various third-party, real-time data salets to see traffic safety data in a new way. They will also pursue outreach and education efforts related to speed management and rural-high-risk road safety improvement projects. States and territories that have made a commitment or are in the last stage of finalizing their commitment include: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming. Beyond Lucid Technologies (BLT) is dedicated to working with fleet operators — starting with ambulance and fire services — to ensure that when a crash occurs, first responders have critical clinical context about the vehicle’s occupants and can provide the most informed care possible. The company’s HALCYON Post-Crash Intelligence platform is being piloted in two states to demonstrate the value of post-crash care technology that provides critical information about who was likely involved in the crash such as the number of people and their critical health contexts. BLT aims to deploy this technology in additional states by mid-2024 to help Responders to a crash involving an ambulance or fire vehicle know the health context of those impacted. The Ford Fund continues to provide philanthropic funding to promote affordable, reliable and safe mobility. The centerpiece of its efforts to promote safer transportation for all is the “Driving Skills for Life” program in the U.S., Europe and Asia Pacific. Entering its 21st year in partnership with the Governors Highway Safety Association, this program invites newly licensed and permitted teenage drivers to go through various hands-on training exercises. In 2024, the Ford Fund will enhance its programming to include discussions around vulnerable road user safety, outreach to teen drivers without access to driving resources and training, and outreach to stakeholders around the Safe Systems Approach philosophies and messaging. The Ford Fund also provides grant funding to nonprofit organizations addressing roadway safety, emphasizing programs promoting safer conditions for vulnerable road users. In December 2023, the Ford Fund announced a $5 million investment in mobility solutions focused on addressing transportation insecurity in Ford’s hometown communities in Southeastern Michigan, Louisville, Kansas City, Chicago, Ohio, West Tennessee and Buffalo. Stellaris, the maker of Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Maserati brand vehicles, is committed to enhancing safety for drivers, passengers, and all roadway users by raising awareness about vehicle safety recalls through public awareness campaigns and by taking steps to raise the repair rate for vehicles with open recalls — especially among underserved communities where repair rates are disproportionately lower, including communities of color, tribal nations, rural areas, low-income populations and military families. Throughout 2024, this will involve attending events at multiple military bases, participating in tribal nation traffic and health safety events, and collaborating directly with community leaders to create and deliver purpose-built communications for their communities. More specifically, Stellantis will conduct media buys in high-risk communities, triple door-to-door canvassing staff from 50 to 150 canvassers, expand canvassing from 29 to more than 70 metro markets, provide all U.S. military branches with digital and physical marketing content for distribution to service members, and engage tribal safety professionals to offer digital and physical safety materials to share with their communities. The National Center for Rural Road Safety will connect with and train rural practitioners across the country. Their signature training is the Road Safety Champion Program, a “Safety 101” certificate training for staff from transportation, public health, and law enforcement agencies who have an interest in roadway safety but are not safety experts. The Center will also promote rural traffic safety culture through its annual Rural Road Safety Awareness Week. Additionally, they will connect rural and tribal practitioners with the people, technical assistance, rural safety practices and resources, and federal funding opportunities they need to implement the Safe System Approach to get to Zero Fatalities and Serious Injuries. The DOT’s NRSS was launched in 2022 in response to the crisis of roadway deaths in America, which had been steadily rising since 2010 before surging in 2020. In a positive sign, the last six quarters have shown small decreases in traffic fatalities, according to preliminary data. The NRSS outlines a concrete set of actions the DOT has committed to and adopts a five-pronged approach that includes: Safer people Safer vehicles Safer speeds Safer roads Better post-crash care During the February event, the DOT announced $1.25 billion in funding available for the next round of its Safe Streets and Roads for All discretionary grant program. These competitive grants help cities, counties, tribes and metropolitan planning organizations create safety plans, demonstrate effective strategies and implement safety projects that prevent deaths and severe injuries on our nation’s roadways. Maverick leverages SKF, Road Ready platforms to avoid wheel separation on the road

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Maverick Transportation is working with SKF and Road Ready to help its fleet avoid costly wheel bearing incidents while on the road. Maverick is currently leveraging SKF’s TraX wheel end monitoring (WEM) system and Road Ready’s trailer telematics system on 900 trailers. The carrier plans to equip the remainder of its fleet, which includes approximately 2,400 flatbed trailers and other specialty units, with the systems by the end of 2024. “Wheel separation is a catastrophic failure that sends a wheel assembly rolling down a highway — and it’s incredibly dangerous,” said Mike Jeffress, vice president of maintenance at Maverick Transportation. The new systems are already helping the fleet prevent incidents. “With Road Ready and TraX, we caught this failing wheel bearing way ahead of true failure — and that’s a significant cost savings.” Spalling (pitting or flaking away of bearing material) is a very early sign of future failure, and knowing about it early allowed Maverick to address the issue well before there was any danger on the road. According to a press release from SKF, it’s estimated that between 750 and 1,050 wheel separations occur each year and 7,000 truck fires happen on the nation’s roadways every year. The Technology & Maintenance Council of the American Truckers Association cites the top four causes of truck fires are failures of brakes, wheel bearings, air leaks and tires — all of which are preventable if monitored and maintained. “Maverick is a prime example of how fleets can lead the industry by using technology to prevent critical failures rather than reacting after they occur,” said Dane Hollar, vice president of Road Ready Sales. “A proactive response, like this one, sends a clear message that Maverick is willing to go the extra mile to ensure their customers’ cargo is delivered safely and on time.” Maverick was able to harness the power SKF’s TraX WEM sensor through the Road Ready platform. Because Road Ready is designed to integrate multiple data feeds from a single trailer, the TraX WEM, installed at the outboard side of the truck wheel rim, alerted the system to unusual vibrations from the bearing so Maverick could service the trailer before catastrophic failure. “Trax WEM is a small but extremely effective way to monitor the truck and trailer bearings as well as abnormal wheel end temperatures and detect potential problems before they occur,” said Cengiz Shevket, president of vehicle aftermarket sales-North America at SKF. “Detecting wheel-end problems early helps reduce unscheduled downtime, saves money from more costly repairs and makes the truck safer for the driver and the vehicles around it.”

LAS VEGAS — Geotab and Daimler Truck North America (DTNA) have announced a partnership designed to simplify fleet management. According to a statement released by the two companies, fleets can now integrate direct truck freight data from Freightliner trucks using DTNA’s data-as-a-service (DaaS) technology and the MyGeotab fleet management platform. This integration allows fleets to collect and transform data from multiple sources in one unified platform. “We are excited to welcome Geotab to our growing data-as-a-service ecosystem. By powering Geotab’s platform with high-fidelity data from DTNA’s factory-installed telematics device and innovative DaaS technology, our customers will benefit from an enterprise-quality integrated system that delivers comprehensive data-driven insights,” said Anil Khanna, director of connected products at DTNA. “Through the DaaS innovation, DTNA is enabling new connectivity-led solutions for the end benefit of our customers. The integration of DTNA’s DaaS technology with Geotab’s platform is a notable step in maximizing convenience while unlocking value for our fleets.” As fleets’ needs have continued to evolve, many OEMs are in the process of adapting and enhancing their capabilities to fully harness the rich potential of data generated by their vehicles. This partnership seeks to accelerate that journey by tapping into a reservoir of expertise and resources that the Geotab platform readily provides, the statement noted. “In today’s rapidly evolving fleet management landscape, the need for high-quality, accessible data insights has become paramount for streamlined, efficient, and adaptive operations. Our alliance with DTNA marks a significant stride forward in simplifying the complex data-driven decision-making process that modern fleet operations demand,” said Scott Sutarik, vice president of enterprise solutions at Geotab. “Bringing together the capabilities of DTNA’s factory-installed telematics with Geotab’s robust platform, we are not only facilitating seamless data integration but also fostering a relationship that will help catalyze the global movement towards intelligent, efficient, and sustainable fleet solutions. Together, we are paving the way for a future where technology and convenience can coexist.” For more information about the Geotab Integrated Solution for Freightliner, click here.

ProvisionAi aims to take 180K trucks off roads in ’24 with load optimization

FRANKLIN, Tenn. — ProvisionAi reports that companies using its AutoO2 load optimization solution were able to remove 88,000 trucks from highways in 2023. “Using AutoO2, companies can fill trucks fuller so that fewer trucks are used for replenishment,” said Tom Moore, CEO of ProvisionAi. “With 91% of all trucks underloaded, the time is now to max out trailers, keeping in mind that the loads need to be axle-legal and arrive without any product damage. Our clients increase payload by 5-10%.” Reducing carbon emissions across all manufacturing has taken on a global interest in recent years. ProvisionAi’s 2024 goal is to remove 188,000 trucks from highways, reduce carbon emissions and help companies meet their goals set for cost and sustainability. Company officials say that in order to meet these goals, they must: Switch to more efficient modes of transportation, such as rail or barge, which have lower emissions per ton-mile than trucking Request carriers use less carbon-intensive fuels like biodiesel and implement carbon abatement measures to reduce fuel consumption and emissions per mile, such as improving vehicle maintenance, driving behavior and aerodynamics “Breaking down the freight industry and the small size of most of the providers’ fleets, requesting carriers change their operations may be wishful thinking, and switching these modes may or may not be economically viable as today’s requirements for customer service are high,” the news release states. AutoO2 from ProvisionAi uses mathematics and artificial intelligence to convert shipping requirements into optimized, full loads that generate savings in carbon and reduce transportation costs by five to 10%. This technology is able to gather data from existing systems and generate both the optimized shipment configuration and associated 3-D load diagram. AutoO2 also works with customers by creating the correct grouping to meet the customer’s needed date and maximize the payload or breaking large orders into optimized trucks when ordering.

Drivewyze’s free safety service is unveiled Geotab Connect

LAS VEGAS — Drivewyze is showcasing its new Drivewyze Free safety platform at the Geotab Connect event being held through Friday, Feb. 16, in Las Vegas. The new safety platform is free, with no strings attached, the company says. For Geotab users, the alerts can be activated through the Geotab Marketplace. according to a news release.  Exclusive to Drivewyze, the Drivewyze Free platform includes access to agency-sponsored real-time traffic slowdowns and other safety alerts generated in partnership with select state transportation and enforcement agencies through the Drivewyze Smart Roadways highway safety program for connected trucks. Currently, real-time message sets can include warnings for sudden and unexpected slowdowns, virtual safety signs and public emergency broadcasts. Drivewyze’s sponsored alerts and advisories include heads-up warnings for high-rollover risk areas, low bridges, mountain alerts (steep grade ahead, chain-up/brake check stations and runaway ramps) along with rest area information (truck parking availability). “Safety is a shared vision that both Geotab and Drivewyze are deeply committed to. We are proud to contribute to this vision by offering easy and free activation through the Geotab Marketplace,” said Robin Kinsey, senior manager of marketplace sales. “These alerts will help notify drivers of various factors while on the road, allowing them to make informed decisions about their safety.” According to Frances Kilgour, Drivewyze’s vice president of business development, Drivewyze Free couldn’t have been launched without the support of its partners, such as Geotab and state agencies. “We can’t thank Geotab enough for all their support,” she said. “Like us, they understand the importance of highway safety and see the value of how in-cab messaging can alter driver behavior to help avoid accidents.” In fact, studies show that drivers slow down and apply less hard braking when an essential safety alert or advisory is displayed in the cab, the news release states.  “When it comes to accidents, studies have shown that 52% of large truck occupant deaths occurred in crashes in which their vehicles rolled over,” according to the news release. “To help address that, when approaching a high-rollover area, Drivewyze has data to show that their alerts have reduced speed by an average of 7.3 mph for vehicles exceeding 5 mph over the posted speed limit.”

Trucker who used rig to shield traffic from gunfire named a TCA Highway Angel

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) has named truck driver Jason Corino, from Deltona, Florida, a TCA Highway Angel for stopping to shield other motorists from a shooting that was taking place at a roadside traffic stop in front of him. Corino drives for Melton Truck Lines out of Tulsa, Oklahoma.  According to a TCA account of the event, Corino’s story began around 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 29, 2023. At that time, Corino was driving on U.S. 491 in Cortez, Colorado, when he noticed the driver of a vehicle acting abnormally, preventing him from merging. The incident was a case of road rage between the driver of the car and three pickup trucks, which led to someone calling the police to assist, according to TCA. The car passed passed Corino with three trucks and a police unit in pursuit. After driving a few more miles, Corino saw that police had pulled the vehicle over. With no proper shoulder to use for parking, the stopped cars were partly in the right lane, causing Corino and other drivers, who were in the right lane, to try to pass them on the left.   “It’s just me — and the officer’s car in front of me and the suspect’s car in front of him — and I’ve got traffic behind me,” Corino said. “I got about 100 feet away, and the kid (suspect) got out of the car; I heard the first two rounds (of gunfire), and I slammed on my brakes right there to stop traffic behind me.”  Corino was witnessing a deadly shootout that erupted between the suspect, Jason Campbell, and the officer, Cortez Police Department Sergeant Michael Moran, according to TCA. Fortunately, he was able to turn on his truck camera and capture the entire incident, which was later submitted to police.  “I could see the bullets bouncing off the ground,” Corino said. “I stopped right there to protect the people behind me.”  Later on, Corino learned that Moran, the officer who was the first to engage with the suspect, had died as a result of his wounds. The suspect, Campbell, and his passenger were later contacted on private property at 7500 U.S. Highway 160, where a member of the Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office and a member of the Cortez Police Department engaged him, resulting in an officer-involved fatal shooting of the fugitive, according to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. “With his heroic act of protecting the drivers behind him and his quick thinking to turn his camera on, Corino became a key witness to the incident, and the camera footage was extremely helpful to the officer’s investigation,” a TCA news release states. Since the TCA Highway Angels program was established in August 1997, nearly 1,400 professional truck drivers have been recognized as Highway Angels for their extraordinary kindness, courtesy, and courage displayed while on the job. “Thanks to the program’s presenting sponsor, EpicVue, and supporting sponsors, DriverFacts and Northland Insurance, TCA is able to showcase outstanding drivers like Corino,” according to the news release.
