ATA for-hire truck tonnage index dropped 1.6% in June

WASHINGTON — The American Trucking Associations’ (ATA) advanced seasonally adjusted For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index decreased by 1.6% in June after increasing by 3% in May. In June, the index equaled 113.5 (2015=100) compared with 115.3 in May. “While giving back some of the gain from May, it appears that truck freight tonnage is slowly going in the right direction since hitting a recent low in January,” said Bob Costello, chief economist for ATA. “Despite June’s decline, the second quarter average was 0.2% above the first quarter and only 0.2% below the second quarter in 2023, which are good signs that truck freight might be finally turning the corner.” May’s increase was revised down from the association’s June 18 press release. Compared with June 2023, the index decreased 0.4%. In May, the index was up 1% from a year earlier, which was the first year-over-year gain since February 2023. The not-seasonally adjusted index, which represents the change in tonnage actually hauled by the fleets before any seasonal adjustment, equaled 113.1 in June, 5.5% below May. ATA’s For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index is dominated by contract freight rather than traditional spot market freight. In calculating the index, 100 represents 2015. ATA calculates the tonnage index based on surveys from its membership. This is a preliminary figure and is subject to change in the final report, which is issued around the fifth of each month. The report includes month-to-month and year-over-year results, relevant economic comparisons and key financial indicators.

FMCSA removes four ELDs from legal registered list

WASHINGTON — On Tuesday, July 23, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) announced its decision to remove four electronic logging devices (ELDs) from the registered list of ELDs. The four devices include: CTE-LOG ELD ELD VOLT POWERTRUCKS ELD TFM ELD The reason for the removal of the four ELDs was the failure of the ELD providers to meet the minimum requirements in 49 CFR part 395, subpart B, appendix A. The four ELDs now appear on FMCSA’s Revoked Devices list. Motor carriers and drivers who use the ELDs listed above must take the following actions: Discontinue using the revoked ELDs and revert to paper logs or logging software to record required hours of service data. Replace the revoked ELDs with compliant ELDs from the Registered Devices list before Sept. 21, 2024. It was stated that motor carriers will have up to 60 days to replace the now-revoked ELDs.  Failure to do this will land the motor carrier in violation of 49 CFR 395.8 (a)(1) — receive a “No record of duty status,” and the drivers will be placed out-of-service in accordance with the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) OOS Criteria. The reinstatement of the ELDs is possible if the providers correct the identified deficiencies for their devices, which will place them back on the registered list of ELDs. FMCSA encourages motor carriers to take the actions listed above as soon as possible to avoid potential compliance issues.

Sen. Padilla, EPA announce nearly $500 million to decarbonize air pollution in Southern California

COMMERCE, Calif. — On July 22, U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) was joined by senior leadership from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the South Coast Air Quality Management District (South Coast AQMD) to announce nearly $500 million in funding for South Coast AQMD. According to a press release from Padilla’s office, the funds will help decarbonize the transportation and freight sectors and improve air quality for Southern California residents. This historic funding comes as part of the EPA’s Climate Pollution Reduction Grants (CPRG) program and was made possible by the Inflation Reduction Act, which Padilla supported. Padilla led EPA officials on a tour of freight transportation operators in the Inland Empire to experience firsthand the effects of air pollution in the region and discuss opportunities for continued collaboration to transition to a zero-emission transportation sector. The tour included a visit to WattEV in San Bernardino, the Inland Empire’s first heavy-duty truck charging depot. “Today’s historic half-a-billion-dollar investment marks a consequential step in curbing the harmful effects of toxic air pollution for current and future generations,” Padilla said. “Southern California is the heart of our nation’s goods movement, and by making these crucial investments in zero-emission infrastructure, we are one step closer to protecting our planet, decarbonizing the heavy-duty sector, and improving air quality for underserved communities who for too long have been left behind.” According to Padilla’s office, this CPRG investment will slash emissions generated by goods movement near the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach (San Pedro Ports) by incentivizing the development of zero-emission vehicle charging equipment, zero-emission freight vehicles, battery electric cargo equipment, and electric switcher locomotives. “With the Inflation Reduction Act’s Climate Pollution Reduction Grants program, the Biden-Harris Administration is empowering community-driven solutions to fight climate change, protect public health, and grow our economy,” said Joe Goffman, assistant administrator for EPA’s office of Air and Radiation. The CPRG funds will help the South Coast’s Invest Clean project bring about “transformative change for the Southern California goods movement corridor by addressing the most significant challenges to deploying zero emissions vehicles and equipment,” Goffman noted. In addition, he said, reducing greenhouse gas emissions will protect public health and support economic development and job creation. “The Climate Pollution Reduction Grants being unveiled today will deliver unprecedented resources to states, local governments, and tribes — here in Southern California and across the U.S. — for local solutions that can provide national examples to accelerate the needed transition off of fossil fuels,” said EPA Pacific Southwest Regional Administrator Martha Guzman. “These efforts will create jobs, reduce the emissions fueling climate change, and clean up the dirty, dangerous air that too many already overburdened communities have breathed for too long.” CARB chair Liane Randolph pointed to the importance of the freight industry in the state. “The goods movement in California is an economic pillar, and investments in moving the sector toward zero-emissions technology will pay off in clean air and a healthier future, especially for communities that for far too long have been at the frontlines of pollution,” Randolph said. “The award also represents an important partnership between federal, state and local agencies to accelerate solutions that tackle climate change and reduce pollution.” Vanessa Delgado, chair of South Coast AQMD’s Governing Board, expressed gratitude for the funding. “Over the next 25 years, these funds will help reduce 12 million metric tons of carbon emissions. On top of that, 1600 tons of smog-forming emissions will be avoided annually while creating green jobs and fostering economic growth,” she said. In total, EPA awarded 25 applicants a combined $4.3 billion through the CPRG program to implement community-driven solutions that tackle the climate crisis, reduce air pollution, advance environmental justice, and accelerate America’s clean energy transition. When combined, the proposed projects would reduce greenhouse gas pollution by as much as 971 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2050, roughly the emissions from 5 million average homes’ energy use each year for over 25 years.

Microsoft outages still impacting your drivers’ ELDs? Here’s what to do

WASHINGTON — Many companies in the transportation industry are still experiencing the after-effects relating to last week’s Microsoft application outrage, including malfunctioning electronic logging devices (ELDs). The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) reminds carriers to follow the proper steps as soon as an ELD malfunction is reported. The first step is to give your ELD provider a call — and be sure drivers are equipped to temporarily record activities using paper logs in accordance with regulations. According to FMCSA, if a motor carrier is experiencing malfunctioning on their ELD, the individual must: Correct, repair, replace or service the malfunctioning ELD within eight days of discovering the condition or a driver’s notification to the driver, whichever comes first; and, Ensure its driver status (RODS) if the malfunction hinders the accuracy of the recording of the driver’s hours of service data until the ELD is back in service. The website indicates that drivers are permitted to submit a request for an ELD malfunction extension to the FMCSA Division Administrator corresponding to the state of the driver’s main place of business. The request must be submitted within five days following the driver’s notification of the malfunction to the motor carrier, must bear the motor carrier’s signature, and must contain the information mandated by 49 CFR 395.34(d)(2). For more information about actions to take in the event of ELD malfunctions, click here.

ACT Research: Preliminary net trailer orders for June reflect continued slowdown

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Preliminary net trailer orders rose slightly from May to June, but at 6,300 units, they were lower than last June — down 19% year over year. Seasonal adjustment in the cycle boosts June’s tally to 8,100 units. (Final June results will be available later this month. This preliminary market estimate should be within ±5% of the final order tally.) “This month’s data show 26,000 trailers were ordered in Q2’24, a 14% contraction compared to the same quarter in 2023. June’s net orders bring the year-to-date tally to 74,500, a reduction of 23,900 units, or 24% lower, compared to the first half of last year,” said Jennifer McNealy, director of commercial vehicle market research and publications at ACT Research. “This year’s slower trailer orders are no surprise given the elevated order velocity of the past few years — and with continuing weak for-hire truck market fundamentals and already-filled dealer inventories, it looks like trailer demand is likely to remain constrained for some time,” she continued. “That said, it is important to remember that for orders, we are now in the weakest months of the annual cycle, minimally suggesting there is no catalyst for stronger orders before the fall and the OEMs’ opening of their 2025 order books.” McNealy says she expects to see fleets starting to make more money during the second half of 2024, allowing businesses to invest in new equipment. However, she noted, “The impact likely will be muted for the trailer industry, as we continue to expect their willingness to spend will lean toward the purchase of new power units ahead of the EPA’s implementation of 2027 regulations, which we believe has already begun.” Overall, she predicts, recovery will remain slow. “Industry anecdotes suggest that the ‘pause button’ is expected to remain pressed through the remainder of 2024,” she said. “The industry’s largest segments remain under pressure, cancellations remain elevated as dealers and fleets recalibrate their needs, and external forces like the US presidential election, low used equipment prices, and high interest rates add to uncertainly into the near- and medium-term.”

Trucker’s quick action earns TCA Highway Angel award

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Roy Chandler from Rockport, Texas, is named as a recipient of the Truckload Carriers Association’s (TCA) Highway Angel award. Chandler is a Diamon Transportation System, Inc. driver in Racine, Wisconsin. Chandler, a second-generation truck driver for 37 years, has received this award after he provided a helping hand to a woman who he witnessed rear-ending a semi-truck. The day of this occurrence was in the late afternoon of April 20, 2024, in Morris County, Texas, on Interstate 30 in heavy rain conditions. At the same time, he witnessed a young woman speed past him in the left lane despite visibility being extremely low. He then witnessed the same young woman attempt to merge back into the right lane. The heavy weather conditions caused water to spray onto the windshields of vehicles, which prevented her from seeing another semi-truck in the lane she was merging into, causing her to crash into the back end of the semi and flip multiple times into a median. “She hit the back tire, and the momentum of her tire going forward, and his tire just launched her into midair,” Chandler said. “She went up about 20 feet into mid-air.” Upon seeing this, Chandler immediately pulled to the side of the highway and ran to help the woman. He found her responsive with minor injuries but trapped in her car. He also checked on the shaken truck driver, who complained of dizziness. He called 911 to report the accident and stayed with both drivers until emergency services arrived. Chandler remained on the scene until a state trooper arrived, and he provided the trooper with his dashcam footage of the accident. Thinking back on why he stopped to help both crash victims, Chandler said, “It’s always what we’re supposed to do. As a Christian and as a truck driver, I’m supposed to help wherever I can. To me, it was just another day at work.” Since the program was first incepted in 1997, and with the continued support from sponsors, almost 1,500 professional truck drivers have been recognized as Highway Angels. These angels have displayed exemplary kindness, courtesy, and courage throughout their careers.   The TCA Highway Angels website can be accessed at https://www.truckload.org/highway-angel/.

Arpin International Group reappoints of Mark J. Burchell as chairman

WEST WARWICK, R.I. — Arpin International Group recently announced that Mark J. Burcell, the company’s VP of Global Sales and Business Development, has been reappointed Chairman of the International Federation of International Furniture Removers’ (FIDI) Quality Supervisory Committee (FQSC).  As chairman, Burcell will convene and manage quarterly formal meetings between the FQSC and the FIDI Quality Coordination Centre leadership team in Belgium. His professional board experience has prepared him for this position, and he has the necessary skills to succeed. He was also initially elected to the FQSC during the organization’s conference in 2018 and has been its Chairman for the last two years. “I am deeply honored to be re-appointed as Chairman of the FIDI Quality Supervisory Committee,” said Burchell, his enthusiasm for the role evident. He continued, “I find great joy in this role on several levels. Firstly, I sincerely appreciate the hard work of the Coordination Centre, and I relish the interaction with John Prooij, the leader of the FIDI Quality team. Moreover, I enjoy the camaraderie with my fellow committee members and the discussions with affiliate members worldwide. The global nature of FIDI and its members creates a worldwide network of like-minded companies that all support each other. I am pleased to report that relatively few audit-related issues require arbitration, allowing us to focus our time on the progression of our quality systems, standards, programs, and processes.”  “It is vital for a membership organization like FIDI to have structured input from its affiliates, particularly when this concerns FIDI’s mandatory Quality Programs,” said FIDI’s Secretary General, Jesse van Sas. “Mark Burchell and his FQSC colleagues, thanks to their long experience in moving and relocation services, serve this role excellently, thus supporting the organization’s strategic vision. It reassures the broad membership that the supervision over the FIDI Quality Certifications is in the hands of their peers.”

ACT driver Mark Wilson earns TCA Highway Angel wings for pulling trapped driver from wreckage

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Mark Wilson of Hernando, Mississippi, has been awarded a TCA Highway Angel award for his courageous act on the job. Wilson is an American Central Transport (ACT) driver in Kansas City, Missouri. Wilson’s heroic act occurred in the late morning of May 2, 2024. On I-70 near Marshall, Missouri, Wilson observed a passenger vehicle lose control and drive off the road into a ditch. Upon entering the ditch at a high speed, the car rolled multiple times. Wilson pulled over onto the shoulder of the road, risking possible danger to reach the wrecked car and offer help. “It end-over-end crashed,” Wilson said. “I was only 100 feet away from him by the time I parked,” said Wilson. “Fear took over because airbags were covering the window,” Wilson said. “I was afraid if I looked in, I was gonna see something I couldn’t unsee.” Once he arrived at the car, he yelled into it and heard a response from the driver. Wilson noticed the driver was a large man who, to keep him responsive if he had severe internal injuries, told him that he was driving to Illinois to pick up his grandmother so she could attend his college graduation at a University in Nebraska. Wilson noticed that the man was pinned in the car and unable to get out on his own, so he grabbed an arm of his and started pulling to see if he could slide out. “I pulled him out as far as I could, and I told him, ‘I need you to hug me like I’m your best friend,’” Wilson said. Once the driver did this, Wilson pulled him out of the vehicle and stayed with him until help arrived. Emergency vehicles arrived shortly after, but the man refused treatment. When thinking about why he stopped to help the man, Wilson said, “How could I just drive away? It just seemed like there was no way anybody could have survived that crash.” Since the program was first incepted in 1997, and with the continued support from sponsors, almost 1,500 professional truck drivers have been recognized as Highway Angels. These angels have displayed exemplary kindness, courtesy, and courage throughout their careers.   The TCA Highway Angels website can be accessed at https://www.truckload.org/highway-angel/.

TCA Highway Angel named after helping victims at a fatal crash scene

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) has recently announced the newest additions to their Highway Angel awards.  Darrin Gillmore from Barrie, Ontario, Canada is no stranger to the award. In fact, it’s his second time to be honored. His heroic story begins in the late afternoon of May 2, 2024. Gillman and his trainee were traveling near Sintaluta, Saskatchewan, on the corner of Highway 606 and Highway 1 when they encountered a two-vehicle accident involving three people within 60 seconds of its happening. A man involved in the crash could remove himself from the vehicle he was in, which Gillmore and his trainee helped until EMS arrived. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case for all three victims. “I had my student pull over, so I grabbed my fire extinguisher, my bolt cutters and my first aid kit,” said Gillmore. “We went to the accident scene, and there was a lady that was fatally injured.” The men proceeded to cut the horn and battery on one vehicle to prevent a fire. In the vehicle with the now-deceased driver was a teenage boy. Trying to help the teenager get out of the car, the men helped to calm him and attended to his injuries. “We tried to keep the kid calm — obviously, he knew his grandma was dead,” Gillmore said. “We comforted him until the EMS showed up, and they took over from there.” As a truck driver for two decades, Gillmore has seen or been at the scene of about three fatal crashes. “I’ve been to many, many, many accidents, and I always stop, and I always help—I just do my best,” he said. Since the program was first incepted in 1997, and with the continued support from sponsors, almost 1,500 professional truck drivers have been recognized as Highway Angels. These angels have displayed exemplary kindness, courtesy, and courage throughout their careers.   The TCA Highway Angels website can be accessed at https://www.truckload.org/highway-angel/.

Fatal crash involving tractor-trailer occurs in southern Indiana

LOUSIVILLE, Ky. — A 50-year-old Indiana man is dead after Indiana State Police reported a deadly crash involving a tractor-trailer that occurred on I-64 eastbound. The crash involved a 2023 Tesla T3 and a 2011 Kenworth tractor-trailer on Wednesday, July 10, afternoon at the 99.5-mile marker in Harrison County. Authorities investigated and found that the tractor-trailer was traveling east on the interstate when it suddenly had a mechanical issue, causing the truck to lose power. Due to oncoming travel, the truck driver could not steer into the right lane or shoulder but could slow down and get on the left side of the interstate. The truck driver then put out the emergency triangles behind the truck. It was further learned that the driver of the Tesla, Suresh Kumar Lohano of Washington, Indiana, did not notice the truck or the triangles and reared the car. Lohano was pronounced deceased at the scene, while the truck driver received no injuries.

DHL Supply Chain reduce carbon emissions with biomethane trucks across Tesco Ireland network

DUBLIN, Ireland — As the U.S. moves toward zero-emission vehicles, , the rest of the world is working towards the same goal. DHL Supply Chain and Tesco Ireland are no different. According to a recent release, the two companies are ramping up their commitment to delivering 50 state-of-the-art biomethane-fueled trucks that will operate throughout their country-wide distribution network through their partnership. By replacing 50 diesel units, Tesco Ireland will reduce tailpipe carbon emissions by up to 90%, reducing its carbon footprint. “This is such an important project to demonstrate the role biomethane can play in Irish commercial transport and a significant step towards decarbonizing Tesco’s fleet. Our partnership with Tesco shows what can be achieved through a shared commitment to sustainability, and we’re looking forward to continuing this journey together,” said DHL Supply Chain’s David O’Neill. “DHL is fundamentally decarbonizing a significant proportion of the retail transport sector in Ireland, and this partnership with Tesco Ireland is a big part of that story. This project is a great example of our Green Transport Policy, guiding the transition of 30% of our own fleet to a green alternative by the end of 2026, an important enabler in achieving our sustainability goals.” Each of the biomethane trucks has a range capacity of 700 km (435 miles) on a full tank, which will allow Tesco business to reach any of its 177 stores and return without refueling. “Our network is one of the most sophisticated distribution networks in the country. More than 1,800 journeys are made from our distribution centres every week to our 177 stores,” said Tesco Ireland Retail & Distribution Director Ger Counihan. We have worked hard with DHL to prepare for the switch from diesel to biomethane trucks, and this move to cleaner energy will reduce the carbon emissions created by this fleet considerably.” “This is a significant moment in our journey towards decarbonizing our business. Transitioning to biomethane from diesel will significantly reduce our transport emissions and is an important step towards reaching our goal of net zero emissions across scopes 1, 2 and 3 by 2050,” said Tesco Ireland’s Head of Sustainability, Andy McGregor. The trucks will utilize renewable fuel sourced from anaerobic digestion plants in Ireland and Europe. They will refuel at the recently inaugurated BioCNG station managed by Flogas, located at St Margaret’s in North Dublin.
