WIT names PACCAR’s Megan Junker member of the month for July

ARLINGTON, Va. — The Women In Trucking Association (WIT) recently announced Megan Junker as its July 2024 Member of the Month. Junker serves as the product director for electric vehicles at PACCAR Parts, a division of PACCAR. A release issued recently stated Junker fully immersed herself in the industry’s operations, from the trucking fleets to product marketing. “Her journey in the trucking industry is a testament to its possibilities and growth,” the release stated. “She has poured her heart and soul into her career in outside sales, fleet and dealer support, and product marketing, demonstrating a genuinely inspiring passion. Her enthusiasm for learning anything she could about the industry led her to dedicate herself to participating in the Technology and Maintenance Council (TMC) and the TMC Leaders of Tomorrow Program. She feels the field is infectious because of the products she represents and their crucial economics.” WIT said in its release that Junker” also loves that what she’s doing is making a difference, not only within the trucking industry but also by inspiring women who aspire to be in the industry or are already in it. Junker wants women interested in the trucking industry to know that, in her personal experience, women are a robust support system.” “Perhaps because we are not always the majority in the room, we understand what it is like not to be the majority. Therefore, we really support each other by bringing each other into the middle. We have the empathy to support each other,” Junker said. “What has made this industry so successful is its ability to adapt and evolve. Electrification is a new opportunity to continue that evolution.” Junker’s advice to women aspiring to join the trucking industry is simple yet powerful, encouraging them to stay true to themselves, believe in their abilities, and never let anything hinder their passion. Mack Trucks Historical Museum reaches milestone as it celebrates 40 years

ALLENTOWN, Pa. — The Mack Trucks Historical Museum announced it will commemorate its 40th anniversary celebration during the 2024 Trucktoberfest at the Mack Experience Center in October. “Since its inception in 1900, Mack Trucks has been involved in everything from World War I to major infrastructure projects such as the construction of the Hoover Dam and the New York City subway system,” said David Galbraith, Mack Trucks vice president of global brand and marketing. “We are proud to have the Mack Museum showcase all of these landmark construction projects, as well as Mack’s 124 years of achievements.” The 15,000-square-foot nonprofit museum is a treasure trove for Mack Trucks enthusiasts. It proudly displays 30 vehicles, each a testament to Mack Trucks’ rich history. Among these is a 1909 Mack tourist bus, a cherished relic lovingly restored and maintained by museum staff and volunteers. Along with its vintage vehicles, the museum also has over 40 million pages of records that detail Mack’s overall history and how it reached its leading position in the development of modern American trucking. About 10,000 annual visitors are drawn to the museum’s vintage Mack® trucks and detailed archives on display. “Not only do we preserve and catalog the Mack legacy, but we also share the importance of our vehicles to the function of the world,” said Doug Maney, Mack Museum curator and lead caretaker. “Each year, we answer more than 1,500 questions about Mack, from dealers seeking to service an older truck to hobbyists asking about vehicle parts. The overcapacity of Class 8 vehicles boosts inventory expectations for 2024

COLUMBUS, Ind. — ACT Research has published its latest edition of North American Commercial Vehicle OUTLOOK. In the publication, ACT Research reported that, apart from Class 8, the predictions for trailers and Classes 4-7 vehicles remained unchanged. “Not only did April build not slow in the face of tough freight fundamentals, falling backlogs, and near-record inventories, production of Class 8 vehicles came in well ahead of expectations. Still strong production and an upwards adjustment to our inventory-carrying assumptions boosts 2024 output while reducing 2025,” according to Kenny Vieth, ACT’s President and Senior Analyst. “The uptick in 2024 expectations into worsening conditions is a coin toss: we may miss the timing, but shallower sooner or deeper later appear to the options,” he added. “Class 8 overcapacity persisting longer in 2024 and weighing more heavily on carrier profitability is not just a risk to Class 8, but also to the trailer forecast. If current market demand reflects EPA’27 prebuying, that prebuying comes at the expense of better freight rates sooner. While over-the-road carriers are under considerable pressure, we would be remiss not to note that vocational truck markets are in better shape than tractor markets, though even here, inventories are getting extended.” Several areas of strength persist in the Class 8 market, yet: For-hire carrier profits have plummeted to their lowest since 2010. Amidst the cycle’s nadir, capacity has only increased without any rationalization. This expansion of capacity has driven freight rates to recessionary levels, exacerbating the downturn. Moreover, the economy’s recovery rate is progressing at roughly half the GDP growth rate of over 4% seen in the second half of 2023.  

Used truck sales defy expectations with 7.4% increase in May

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Counter to expectations, preliminary Class 8 same dealer used truck retail sales volumes continued to increase in May (+7.4%), according to the latest preliminary release of the State of the Industry: U.S. Classes 3-8 Used Trucks published by ACT Research. “Besides a soft freight environment, flat freight rates, and elevated borrowing costs, seasonality called for about a 6% decline,” said Steve Tam, vice president at ACT Research. “Auction volumes rebounded heartily from April’s post-quarter-end hangover, adding 38% m/m in May. Wholesale activity floated higher, gaining 1.9% m/m.” Tam concluded, “May retail sales are typically six percentage points below normal. Second-quarter sales tend to be pretty average, with June as the epitome of average. Sales are also usually unremarkable in July.”    

Delaware police investigating fatal crash along I-495

WILMINGTON, Del. — The Delaware State Police began investigating a two-vehicle fatal crash that occurred in the early morning of Monday, June 10. At approximately 2:12 a.m., a white International HV613 USPS truck tractor was traveling on I-495 northbound just north of Edgemoor Road. The second vehicle, a silver Nissan Altima, was traveling in the same direction and collided with the rear end of the USPS truck. According to authorities, the impact caused the USPS truck to spin towards the edge of the roadway (eastern side), striking a metal guardrail and overturning down an embankment before coming to a stop in the grassy area between I-495 and railroad tracks. The Nissan struck the guardrail along the right shoulder before it stopped in the northbound interstate lanes. Officers reported that the cause of the crash was undetermined but that an investigation would be completed to find the answer. The driver of the USPS truck, a 59-year-old man from Yeadon, Pennsylvania, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Nissan driver, a 31-year-old man from Middletown, Delaware, only received non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at an area hospital.  The name of the deceased is being withheld at the moment.    

STC, trucking companies promoting soy-based wheel lube pads

ANKENY, Iowa — Soy Transportation Coalition (STC) has partnered with trucking companies to promote soy-based fifth-wheel lube pads. Soybean producers persist in seeking opportunities to diversify markets for soybeans and their products while also addressing the increasing demand for environmental sustainability. The recent collaboration between the Soy Transportation Coalition (STC) and various trucking companies exemplifies the dual advancement of these goals.  The STC conducted a promotional initiative in which it provided trucking companies and farmers throughout the country with free samples of soy-based fifth-wheel lubrication pads that are produced by Gear Head Lube, a Cedar Falls, Iowa-based manufacturer of environmentally sustainable lubricants. “These products have been in existence for a number of years, but given the STC’s extensive relationships within the transportation sector, we concluded we could play a meaningful role in increasing the awareness and the utilization of these soy-based fifth wheel lube pads,” explains Mike Steenhoek, Executive Director of the Soy Transportation Coalition.  “Unfortunately, there can often be a significant delay between the development of an innovative and effective product and the widespread utilization of it.  The STC’s goal of this project has been to increase awareness and the motivation to use these soy-based fifth wheel lube pads so that the benefits can be more accelerated.” The soy-based fifth wheel pads, square in shape and measuring three by three inches with a thickness of half an inch, are applied by hand at the nine and three o’clock positions on the fifth wheel. Once the trailer is connected, the grease from the pads disperses evenly around the fifth wheel, creating no mess. These pads, which are made of more than 80% U.S. soy, are recognized in the United States Department of Agriculture’s Certified Biobased Product program. “At Ruan, we examine each aspect of our business to identify opportunities to implement more sustainable practices,” says Mike Elliott, Technical Maintenance Operations Manager for Ruan.  “The use of soy-based fifth wheel pads is one such example.  These pads are very effective, easy to use, and affordable.  And as a product listed on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Certified Biobased Product program, they are better for the environment.  We look forward to expanding our usage of this product across the fleet in the future.” The STC leveraged its connections in the trucking and agricultural industries to broadly disseminate free samples of the pads for personal testing across various truck fleets. Accelera venture between Cummins, DTNA, PACCAR changes name, hires new CEO

Accelera, the battery joint venture by Cummins, Daimler Truck North America (DTNA) and PACCAR, is now known as Amplify Cell Technologies. Amplify will be able to advance zero-emissions technology for electric commercial vehicles and industrial applications by localizing battery cell production and the supply chain nationwide, according to a news release announcing the new name and partnerships. Amplify has also named Kel Kearns its new CEO. He will help the company produce lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery cells, “adding value for commercial vehicle customers in North America” “Cummins’ power solutions are at the heart of the economy, and we have the responsibility to decarbonize in a way that meets our customers’ varied needs as they navigate the energy transition,” said Jennifer Rumsey, Chair and CEO at Cummins. “Amplify Cell Technologies will enable Accelera by Cummins and our partners to deliver solutions that best serve our customers and the planet. This is a significant step forward as we lead our industry into the next era of smarter, cleaner power.” Amplify will soon begin construction of a 21-gigawatt hour (GWh) factory in Marshall County, Mississippi, with potential for further expansion as demand grows, according to the news release. The factory is expected to create more than 2,000 U.S. manufacturing jobs and is targeting the start of its production operations in 2027. John O’Leary, President and CEO of Daimler Truck North America, said, he is keeping a focus on cost and smart capital allocation. Those, he noted, will be key to succeeding in sustainable transportation. “This partnership enables economies of scale beyond Daimler Truck,” O’Leary said. “It is a key puzzle piece of our battery industrialization strategy, ensuring access to the right battery cell technology at the right cost and right time for our customers.” Preston Feight, PACCAR’s chief executive officer, said that Amplify Cell Technologies “will enable PACCAR to offer customers cost-effective premium quality battery electric powertrains that meet their operational and sustainability need.” “We are pleased to begin this exciting venture with these world-class partners,” he concluded.

Deadline for Transition Trucking: Driving for Excellence award approaching

ISSAQUAH, Wash. — The trio of Kenworth, FASTPORT, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s “Hiring Our Heroes” initiative is still searching for the top rookie military veteran driver who successfully transitioned into the trucking industry following their retirement from military service. Under the recognition program, Kenworth will provide the grand prize for the ninth consecutive year. The grand prize is a “T680 equipped with a 76-inch sleeper and the PACCAR Powertrain featuring the PACCAR MX-13 engine rated at 455 horsepower, PACCAR TX-12 automated transmission and PACCAR DX-40 tandem rear axles.” Additional features of the T680 are “a Diamond VIT interior in slate gray with madrona accents and includes the latest in driver amenities. Major changes for NMFC take effect in 2025

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Changes are coming. The National Motor Freight Traffic Association, Inc. (NMFTA)™ announced during its Summer Meeting in Louisville, KY, that major National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC)® changes will take effect in the first quarter of 2025. These changes will impact carriers, shippers, and 3PLs. To ensure a smooth transition across the supply chain, NMFTA will host three LTL Listening Sessions in August, each dedicated to a specific industry sector: Carriers Only LTL Listening Session: 2:00-3:00 pm ET on Tuesday, August 6; 3PLs Only LTL Listening Session: 2:00-3:00 pm ET on Wednesday, August 7; and Shippers Only LTL Listening Session: 2:00-3:00 pm ET on Thursday, August 8. “From the upcoming changes, NMFC users will notice that we truly prioritized simplifying the classification system by utilizing a standardized approach based on density, handling, stowability, and liability,” said Keith Peterson, Director of Operations for NMFTA. “We also focused on enhancing the user experience to make it easier to both use and understand the NMFC. These changes will increase efficiency, making it easier to classify freight accurately on the first try.” Peterson added that the goal of the changes taking place in 2025 is to reduce any friction between carriers, shippers, and 3PLs. To ensure that NMFC updates aren’t occurring at once, NMFTA has implemented a phased approach, with the first changes coming in Docket 2025-1. The upcoming phases that will be incorporated by the NMFC consist of: Standardized density scale for LTL freight when handling, stowability and liability issues are not present; Unique identifiers for freight with special handling, stowability, or liability needs; Condensed and modernized commodity listings; and Improved usability of the ClassIT® classification tool. As 2024 progresses, the process is set to become more intensive, informative, and inclusive. Both the NMFTA and NMFC expect the changes to streamline workflows, enhance communication and visibility, and increase the overall satisfaction of everyone involved. “We estimate to move as many as 3,500 single-class items to 13 subcategories,” said Nate Ripke, Director of Commodity and Standards development for NMFTA. “With Docket 2025-2 and thereafter, additional changes are likely to be made, which is why we’re scheduling LTL Listening Sessions this Summer.” The LTL Listening Sessions will allow industry professionals to gain in-depth insight into the reimagination process, ask questions directly to NMFTA representatives, and share direct experiences that can help shape the future of the NMFC. WYDOT announces Teton Pass Road detour plans after mudslide

TETON COUNTY, Wyo. — The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) has formed a plan to deal with the closure of Wyoming State Highway 22/Teton Pass following the mudslide on Saturday, June 8. WYDOT asks commuters to use the U.S. 26 through Swan Valley, then into the Snake River Canyon as they detour around the closed-off area, according to a news release. Before beginning to reconstruct the highway’s collapsed area, WYDOT is “carefully evaluating its stability and investigating the areas adjacent to the site for any possible hazards. There is currently no estimated opening date,” the news release notes. Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon has declared an emergency through an Executive Order due to the mudslide at milepost 15 and the landslide at milepost 12.8. This declaration enables the state to obtain additional resources from the Federal Highway Administration to commence significant repairs. WYDOT expresses gratitude for the prompt response and assistance from various government entities, such as the US Forest Service and the Idaho Transportation Department, facilitating swift mobilization for planning and repair efforts. “I want to express my gratitude to WYDOT Director Westby and his entire team for their efforts to rapidly develop and implement a plan to get traffic moving over Teton Pass again as quickly as possible,” Gordon said. WYDOT geologists and engineers, U.S. Forest Service members and other agencies and partners are securing the area and are optimistic about constructing a secure, temporary bypass around the slide area with local fill material and by paving two temporary lanes. They aim to open this provisional detour to the public, possibly with stringent weight and width limitations, within the next few weeks. Agencies are working together to install road signs to help travelers reach campsites that are not impacted by the landslide at milepost 12.8 and the mudslide at milepost 15. Therefore, both Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park are still open to visitors. To lessen the chance of another mudslide, the plans for the mudslide site at milepost 15 call for geologists and engineers to work together to install a box culvert to add more drainage to the area. The intention is to carry out these tasks concurrently with the temporary detour operations at milepost 12.8. Falcons are born and raised on Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. — Traffic isn’t the only thing that brings the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge to life. There are peregrine falcons there, too. To monitor the falcons’ movements, reproductive behavior and population growth, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) has added color-coded bands to the legs of the three chicks with the assistance of a Sault College environmental technologist Brittny White and recent graduate Glo O’Brien, according to a news release. Along with their leg bands, the peregrine falcon chicks were also given names. The International Bridge staff named the female chicks Janet and Barb and the male chick Chum. Janet and Barb pay tribute to retired bridge toll collectors Barb Winowiecki and the late Janet Hotchkiss. The name Chum honors Janet’s customary way of calling many individuals “chum.” Karl Hansen, a bridge engineer with the International Bridge Administration (IBA), said it remains uncertain whether this is the same pair of falcons that has been nesting on the bridge connecting the U.S. and Canada over the years. Since 2010, nest boxes have been installed on the bridge at sites with signs of previous nesting by peregrines. The resident peregrine falcon pair successfully hatched four chicks last year. According to Hansen, the location has proven to be a triumph, with 42 falcon chicks hatched since the IBA staff began monitoring the birds. Several years ago, the idea of placing video cameras, eventually dubbed “FalCam,” on the nest boxes to give bird watchers and onlookers a front-row seat to the nature of the falcons. During the 1960s and ’70s, the state lost a significant amount of its falcons due to the excessive use of DDT and other environmental contaminants; therefore, this breed of falcon was placed on the federal endangered species list. But it has since been removed due to increased numbers since the 1990s. The falcon is still protected by state and federal law in Michigan. In Canada, the peregrine falcon populations have seen an uptick in recent years. At the federal level, the species is categorized as “not at risk,” with the exception of one subspecies that is identified as “special concern” under the Federal Species at Risk Act. Peregrine falcons, swift hunters that can reach 200 mph, may assist in controlling nuisance pigeon populations. Although pigeons constitute a small fraction of their diet, these formidable predators could deter them from congregating on bridges. This aversion could lead to savings in infrastructure maintenance costs, as pigeon droppings are known to corrode the paint on metal bridge structures. The live stream can be viewed below. ALIQUIPPA, Pa. — PGT Trucking Inc. has opened two new locations, one in Ghent, Kentucky, and one in Spartanburg, South Carolina, according to a June 10 press release. “PGT Trucking is excited to open two new terminals, providing increased service opportunities for our customers and drivers in the Southeast,” said Chad Marsilio, chief operating officer for PGT Trucking. “Through PGT Ghent and PGT Spartanburg, our customers can expect safe, reliable and quality transportation solutions to move their freight. PGT’s proud professional drivers will also benefit from these centralized hubs.” The PGT Ghent location sits on 5 acres and offers ample truck parking, in addition to a brand-new building with an operations center, driver lounge and showers. The facility, at 3738 Highway U.S. 42 W., is positioned near several steel and building product customers and is operated by PKM Transportation Services, LLC. PGT Spartanburg, at 615 Simuel Road, offers office space, a driver lounge, on-site parking and a maintenance facility. Piekos steps into leadership role at Atlas following retirement of Mary Beth Johnson

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Atlas Van Lines has hired Lauren Piekos to serve as vice president of business development, the company announced June 6. Piekos will replace Mary Beth Johnson, who is retiring after a 42-year career with the company.  According to a company statement, Johnson has led the company through many industry-changing initiatives to ensure Atlas remained a leading van line. “It has been my privilege to work beside Mary Beth throughout my entire career at Atlas. On behalf of the Atlas team, we wish her happiness and joy during her retirement,” said Ryan McConnell, president and COO of Atlas. “We look forward to Lauren joining the team to complete a seamless knowledge transfer and transition of leadership from Mary Beth and look forward to the new places she will help guide us.” To help smooth the transition, Piekos worked closely with Johnson while moving into her new role. Piekos has more than a decade of experience in the consumer packaging goods industry, has extensive franchise marketing skills and is knowledgeable about the national franchise and consumer market. She is a graduate of Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business and has a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Southern Indiana.

Damon Lee to join CH Robinson as CFO

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — C.H. Robinson Worldwide Inc. (C.H. Robinson) has appointed Damon Lee as its new chief financial officer (CFO), according to a statement released June 6. Lee will join C.H. Robinson team effective July 8 and will step into the role of CFO after the company’s Form 10-Q has been filed for the second quarter of 2024. Until then, Mike Zechmeister will continue to serve as C.H. Robinson’s CFO, after which he plans to retire. “We are excited to have Damon join our senior leadership team,” said Dave Bozeman, president and CEO of C.H. Robinson. “Damon’s extensive experience and expertise align perfectly with the high standards and forward-thinking mindset we prioritize at Robinson.” Lee currently serves as vice president and CFO for GE Commercial Engines and Services, a division of GE Aerospace. “I am looking forward to joining C.H. Pennsylvania’s 37th annual Truck Driving Championship showcases more than 200 drivers

POCONO MANOR, Pa. — The 37th annual Pennsylvania Truck Driving Championship kicked off Friday, June 7, at the Kalahari Resort and Convention Center in Pocono Manor, Pennsylvania. During the two-day event, hosted by the Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association (PMTA) and presented by Sherwin Williams, 204 of the state’s best drivers will compete for the title of Grand Champion. During the challenge, drivers will complete a written test, perform a pre-trip inspection to find pre-placed defects and safety hazards, and navigate a driving course designed to push their skills to the limit. On Friday, drivers will complete the written test at the Kalahari Convention Center before being divided into three groups. Each group will be ushered through a walk-through of the course walkthrough and perform a pre-trip inspection, simulating the standard procedure of inspecting trucks before hitting the road. More than 1,000 spectators are expected to attend the event on Saturday, supporting family members, co-workers and employees as they tackle the course. The course is designed to challenge drivers in nine categories: 3-axle, 4-axle, 5-axle, flatbed, sleeper, step van, straight truck, tank truck and twin trailers. PMTA, with support from Sherwin Williams, will also offer non-professional drivers a chance to get behind the wheel of a truck and complete a driving course. Of the 204 competitors, only one can claim the title of Grand Champion and hailed as the best truck driver in Pennsylvania. This champion, along with the first-place winners from the other eight categories, will advance to the National Truck Driving Championships. The American Trucking Association will host this event in Indianapolis, Indiana, from August 21-24, 2024. According to a press release from PMTA, the championship program incentivizes safe driving for professional truckers. “Qualifying for the competition is no easy task. Many drivers practice in the hopes of placing or competing at the national level,” the release notes. “For trucking companies, having award-winning drivers is a bonus and can even help lower insurance rates. For drivers, it’s a resume builder and a fun challenge to compete for the top spot.”

Daimler Truck, Tavant launch AI-driven warranty system

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Daimler Truck North America (DTNA) and service lifecycle management (SLM) firm Tavant are working on a new project to, as a news release describes, “transform DTNA’s service operations and enhance customer experience and dealer productivity.” Aiming to find a cutting-edge solution to bring its service operations warranty system up-to-date, DTNA officials decided that merging its system with Tavant’s SLM would modernize the system with the addition of advanced features for its users, the news release notes. “We are excited to expand our global partnership with Daimler through DTNA,” said Sarvesh Mahesh, CEO of Tavant. “Our AI-driven SLM solutions will empower DTNA to achieve their innovation objectives and drive forward with enhanced efficiency. Nebraska Trucking Association’s truck driving championship winners announced

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — The Nebraska Trucking Association (NTA) recently hosted its annual Nebraska Truck Driving Championships (NTDC), which featured professional drivers showcasing their talents in and outside of their trucks. The NTDC is a qualifying event for the National Truck Driving Champions. The competition begins with a written exam, a pre-trip inspection, an oral interview with the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) and is concluded after a driving course, according to a news release. The driving course is designed fresh for each championship. It includes six challenges that drivers may face on the road, testing their abilities. In the final activity, the team award is given to the team with the highest overall average score. This year’s competitors included 32 rookies, a record-setting 13 women, along with returning veterans, totaling 98 drivers and 10 truck classes. The 2024 Grand Champion and Professional Excellence awards went to Eric Stein of Werner Enterprises. The Rookie of the Year is Todd Gimpel of FedEx Freight. There were three special awards given out. These are named in honor of people who made a difference in Nebraska trucking over the years. The Bucky Buchholtz Top Driver Award was given to Rob Jensen from Fremont Contract Carriers. Bucky Buchholtz was a Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) trooper and member of the championship committee. The award goes to the driver who achieved the highest score on the driving score. “The NSP is a highly respected partner of the NTA,” the news release states. “NSP Carrier Enforcement Troopers are integral to the success of the NTDC), where the Bucky Buchholtz Top Driver Award plays a significant role. Named after a notable NSP Trooper and dedicated member of the championship committee, the award honors the driver who achieves the highest score on the driving course. Kurt Everett, a respected member of the championship committee, is commemorated through the Kurt Everett Vehicle Condition Award, which honors the driver with the top pre-trip inspection score. The Kurt Everett Vehicle Condition Award was given to Eric Stein from Werner Enterprises. The Jerry Wessel Award was given to Rob Jensen of Fremont Contract Carriers. The Jerry Wessel Award is named after the esteemed long-time NTDC committee leader and is awarded to drivers who have either competed or volunteered at the championships for a minimum of five years and have exemplified the highest standards of professionalism, industry knowledge and conduct. The top performer in each category progresses to a national contest. Nine category champions will participate in the American Trucking Association’s National Truck Driving Championships Aug. 21-24 in Indianapolis.
