Camo-themed tractors showcase XPO’s pride as a military-friendly employer

GREENWICH, Conn. — In honor of Military Appreciation Month in May, XPO Logistics has installed camouflage wraps on several of its tractors. The wraps will remain in use all year to display XPO’s commitment to military veterans, according to a company statement. The honor of driving the special trucks goes to XPO drivers who are U.S. military veterans and have driven at least 1 million accident-free miles. The company’s military appreciation message can be seen on roads in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. “Our drivers are ambassadors of our workplace values, which include respect, inclusion and safety — qualities that also define the military community,” said LaQuenta Jacobs, chief diversity officer of XPO. “We’re proud to have veterans behind the wheel as we spread the word about the careers we offer for women and men returning to civilian life.” XPO has been named a bronze-level 2021 Military Friendly Employer by Viqtory, a veteran-owned business that connects military veterans with employers.

Chain up stations along US 50 at Colorado’s Monarch Pass getting upgrades

MONARCH PASS, Colo. — The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) began chain up station improvements on Monarch Pass on May 17. The project includes various chain station locations on U.S. 50 between mile points 189 and 211 in Chaffee, Gunnison, and Saguache counties. “CDOT places a high priority on highway projects that help our commercial trucks roll smoothly along key corridors like U.S. 50,” said Shoshana Lew, executive director of CDOT. “It is critical that trucks chain up in winter storm events when Colorado’s chain law is enforced. Chain up stations provide a safe place for drivers to fit snow chains onto (or off) their truck tires.” All chain up stations will have new lighting installed; some locations will be equipped with solar-powered lighting. Five locations will have widening and paving improvements, and two culverts will be replaced for drainage upgrades. Tricon 2 LLC has been selected for this project, and work is expected to be completed this fall. “We appreciate and welcome the Monarch Pass chain station improvements by CDOT. These sites make it safer for truck drivers to comply with the law and apply chains during icy and snow-packed conditions,” said Greg Fulton, president of the Colorado Motor Carriers Association (CMCA). “It’s a great benefit to the trucking industry to have a safe, well-lit environment for drivers to pull off the roadway, get out of their vehicles and safely put chains on tires or remove chains from tires.” Between now and the completion of the project, travelers will encounter construction operations from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Traffic control and temporary signals will be operating 24/7, with one lane-closures at project work zones. Motorists are urged to use caution and watch for heavy equipment. At times, through lanes and turn lanes may be temporarily closed to traffic, causing brief travel delays. Any temporary closures are to ensure the safety of the workers and the traveling public. Motorists should slow down, drive with caution and give themselves extra travel time.

Bulk foods carrier Oakley Transport is first in industry to receive ISO certifications twice

LAKE WALES, Fla. — Oakley Transport Inc. is the only bulk food transporter in its industry to be certified twice with the International Standards Organization (ISO) for its ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 22000:2018. The ISO certifies management systems and operation processes, and services must meet all requirements for standardization and quality assurance. In 2015, Oakley started preparing for ISO certification. When the goal was achieved in 2017, Oakley became the first — and only— bulk food transporter to be certified to such standards. Oakley was awarded recertifications to the newest versions of ISO certifications ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 22000:2018 in March 2021. ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 22000:2018 are stipulations that certify superior operations management, food safety and food defense. Both ensure Oakley’s consistency in operations and services, as well as the company’s ability to meet and exceed all customer and regulatory requirements. “Being ISO certified demonstrates Oakley’s ability to follow procedures and processes,” said Thomas Oakley, president and CEO. “It empowers employees with clear direction and the ability to drive improvement. It ultimately is an affirmation to customers of our focus on their cargo, our services, food safety and defense.” The accomplishment reflects Oakley’s dedication to customer satisfaction and the integrity of customers’ products throughout the entire transportation process, according to Oakley. “We feel these certifications add such a value to our customers,” said Bob Osburn, chief operation officer for Oakley. “They know our diligence in maintaining the safety and integrity of their cargo. From the groves to the processor, the distiller to the bottler, and its final mile onto store shelves and into the homes of the American consumer.”

HP Inc. joins development program to test Embark autonomous trucks

SAN FRANCISCO — Embark Trucks Inc. announced May 13 that technology giant HP Inc. is joining Embark’s Partner Development Program (PDP) to test and deploy autonomous freight. HP will play a critical role in testing self-driving truck technology in a real-world commercial setting, in addition to providing data and feedback to Embark as it expands the PDP. HP will log its first autonomous freight deliveries with Embark, moving printers from Los Angeles to Phoenix, Arizona. The structure of HP’s network, with relatively long hauls departing from a select set of distribution and manufacturing facilities, makes HP particularly well-suited to capture the value of autonomous freight, according to a statement from Embark. These long hauls have the ability to provide increased speed, sustainability, and operational efficiency unlocked by 24/7 on-highway operations. “As our Partner Development Program grows, we’re thrilled to bring storied high-tech companies like HP on board,” said Alex Rodrigues, CEO of Embark. “Embark is excited to work with HP to prepare their carrier network to operate Embark self-driving trucks. The upfront time invested in PDP will provide HP a meaningful head start when it comes time to scale self-driving technology throughout their logistics operations. Self-driving freight will inevitably help large shippers like HP bring additional speed and efficiency into their supply chains.” According to Embark, the PDP is designed to bring carriers and shippers together to deploy autonomous freight, improve speed and reliability for customers, and maintain high safety standards. To date, the PDP includes shippers such as AB Inbev, as well as national carriers including Werner, Bison Transport and Mesilla Valley Transportation. “HP is driving toward net-zero carbon emissions across our entire value chain by 2040,” said Jessica Kipp, global head of worldwide logistics for HP. “Transportation and logistics have an important role to play, and we’re excited to pilot new technologies with Embark that, when combined with electric and alternative fuel vehicles, have the potential to create a far more sustainable fleet and logistics networks than ever before.”

Motor carrier owner indicted on fraud and conspiracy charges

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — On April 22, a grand jury in the Western District of New York indicted Anatoliy Kirik, owner of Orange Transportation Services Inc. (OTS) and Dallas Logistics Inc. (DLI) for conspiracy, false statements, falsification of records, false documents, concealment of material facts and aggravated identity theft. The indictment alleges that Kirik conspired with others to defraud the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) by concealing facts and making false statements regarding affiliations between OTS and DLI. To prevent DLI from inheriting the conditional safety rating assigned to OTS and affiliated entities, Kirik and others misrepresented to FMCSA that DLI was a separate and independent trucking business not affiliated with Kirik’s trucking business. The OTS conditional safety rating resulted in higher operating costs and lower revenue. The indictment stemmed from a criminal charge filed in November 2020. The criminal charge was the result of an investigation by special agents of the Department of Transportation’s Office of Inspector General, under the direction of Douglas Shoemaker, special agent in charge for the Northeast Region, and the Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigation Division, under the direction of Jonathan D. Larsen, special agent-in-charge for the New York Field Office. The charges carry a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — A Mack Anthem model featuring a custom-designed military-themed wrap recently debuted as part of the 2021 edition of “NASCAR Salutes Together with Coca-Cola.” The annual NASCAR Salutes campaign expresses gratitude and respect for the men and women who serve in the U.S. armed forces and their families, and honors those who died defending freedom. A video reveal of the anthem wrapped in the custom 2021 design can be viewed on Mack Trucks’ social media channels (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter). “It’s an honor for Mack to once again be a part of NASCAR’s recognition of military heroes and their families,” said John Walsh, vice president of marketing for Mack Trucks. “This year’s custom design is made even more special by the fact that it was chosen by NASCAR and Mack fans through a social media vote.” The winning design, featuring the five branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, captured 46% of the more than 3,300 votes. This is the fourth consecutive year Mack has wrapped one of NASCAR’s 10 Anthem models in support of NASCAR Salutes, and the second consecutive year that Mack and NASCAR fans had the opportunity to choose the final wrap design. “NASCAR Salutes unites the industry to honor those who serve our country, along with their families and communities,” said Michelle Byron, vice president of partnership marketing at NASCAR. “NASCAR and Mack Trucks share a mutual appreciation for the U.S. Armed Forces, and the custom-designed Mack Anthem is a great rolling tribute everywhere NASCAR goes.” The 2021 NASCAR Salutes Together with Coca-Cola began the first weekend in May at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas, and continues through Memorial Day weekend at the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina. Two sentenced for human smuggling conspiracy

LAREDO, Texas – A 28-year-old Laredo resident has been ordered to federal prison for conspiring to transport undocumented immigrants using a tractor-trailer, according to acting U.S. attorney Jennifer B. Lowery. On May 11, U.S. District Judge Marina Garcia Marmolejo ordered Jose Maria Ramirez to serve a 57-month sentence, to be immediately followed by three years of supervised release. In handing down the sentence, the court noted that Ramirez has repeatedly broken the law and has had supervised release revoked multiple times. Marmolejo further explained there was sufficient evidence to show Ramirez was heavily involved in the human-smuggling conspiracy and was held accountable for the undocumented immigrants in a tractor-trailer as well as a stash house. Ramirez pleaded guilty Nov. 24, 2020, while co-conspirator Eloy Martinez-Carranza entered a guilty plea Dec. 8, 2020. Martinez-Carranza, 35, of South Carolina, was sentenced April 30, also by Marmolejo, to 36 months in prison, to be immediately followed by three years of supervised release. On Oct. 1, 2020, Martinez-Carranza approached the U.S. 83 Border Patrol checkpoint driving a semi-truck and trailer. Soon after his arrival, a K-9 alerted to the presence of contraband in the trailer. Authorities cut the seal on the trailer and found 40 undocumented immigrants, including three unaccompanied minors. The temperature inside the trailer was approximately 109 degrees. Law enforcement also observed coffee grounds scattered around the trailer. Martinez-Carranza claimed he was traveling to Laredo from South Carolina to work as a trucker. However, he did not have a commercial driver’s license or any trucker training. Upon further investigation, authorities identified a location suspected to be a stash house for the undocumented immigrants. Law enforcement conducted surveillance and stopped a vehicle, driven by Ramirez, leaving the house. Authorities searched the home and found a total of 22 undocumented immigrants, including more unaccompanied minors. Ramirez will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility, to be determined in the near future. Homeland Security Investigations conducted the investigation with the assistance of Customs and Border Protection. Assistant U.S. attorney Paul Harrison prosecuted the case.

DeFazio highlights need for clean energy during test-drive of Volvo electric truck

COBURG, Ore. — In early May, Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.), the Chair of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, visited Volvo Trucks North America’s TEC Equipment dealership location in Coburg, Oregon, to test-drive an electric Volvo Class 8 truck and highlight his clean energy priorities. “For years, climate change deniers have argued that big businesses would never choose to invest in clean technologies because it wouldn’t make business sense — but now, big corporations are showing that there is a business case for climate solutions,” DeFazio said. “As I work with President Biden to move the American Jobs Plan through Congress, I look forward to making investments that move our country toward cleaner, greener technologies and a zero-pollution transportation sector. It’s a plan that addresses the existential threat of climate change and creates thousands of good-paying jobs and strengthens an economy reeling from the COVID-19 pandemic.” During May visit, DeFazio was joined by Dave Thompson, founder and CEO of TEC Equipment; Alan Zelenka, assistant director for planning and innovation for the Oregon Department of Energy; Jeff Allen, executive director of Forth Mobility, a nonprofit organization advancing electric, shared and smart transportation; and Jonathan Miller, senior vice president of public affairs for Volvo Group North America. “At Volvo Group North America, we are committed to electrification and many other efforts to support the decarbonization of transportation and sustainability of our environment, including the launch of the Volvo VNR Electric Class 8 truck model, as demonstrated in Coburg, Oregon today,” Miller said. “Last year, the Volvo Group announced plans in line with the Paris Agreement to be fossil-fuel free by 2040. While these are ambitious goals, we are currently taking orders and delivering on our plans to commercially launch battery-electric trucks, buses and construction equipment in the United States and Canada.” The Volvo VNR Electric truck is designed for driving cycles with both local and regional distribution ranges, including food and beverage and pick-up and delivery routes. According to the manufacturer, the truck’s batteries can charge up to 80% within 70 minutes and have an operating range of up to 150 miles, based on the truck’s configuration. As chair of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, DeFazio is expected to be a principal author and negotiator of President Biden’s American Jobs Plan, a wide-sweeping plan aimed at fixing and modernizing the nation’s outdated infrastructure system, according to a prepared statement from DeFazio’s office. DeFazio said he plans to introduce legislative text in the coming weeks that lays out transformative investments in roads, bridges, transit and rail, including funding to help build charging capacity to accommodate the shift to electric vehicles, including passenger vehicles, freight trucks and buses. The statement cites the Business Roundtable, noting that inadequate infrastructure costs U.S. businesses $27 billion per year in extra transportation costs. According to the American Society of Civil Engineers, between 2016 and 2025, the economy will lose almost $4 trillion in economic activity if there are not upgrades to the nation’s infrastructure, which could cost 2.5 million jobs.

Former manager pleads guilty to defrauding $600,000 from Illinois trucking company

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. — Timothy P. Mayer, 41, of Waterloo, Illinois, on May 6 appeared in federal court in St. Louis and pled guilty to defrauding his former employer, Jung Truck Service of Mascoutah, Illinois, out of more than $600,000. In addition to operating its own trucks and warehouse facilities, Jung Truck also provides maintenance services for other trucking companies. Mayer was the manager of Jung Truck’s East St. Louis location. Beginning in July 2019, Mayer started charging expensive tires to Jung Truck’s accounts at a local tire supplier. Mayer then sold the tires on the side and pocketed the cash. The value of the tires Mayer fraudulently charged to Jung Truck exceeded $590,000. Mayer also stole tires and brakes from Jung Truck’s inventory and sold those items on the side. Mayer’s scheme lasted until he was caught in May 2020. Mayer will be sentenced on Aug. 11, 2021. The mail fraud charge to which Mayer pled guilty carries a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and a period of supervised release of up to three years. Mayer will also be ordered to pay full restitution to Jung Truck. The case was investigated by agents from the Federal Bureau Investigation in Springfield, Missouri. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Scott A. Verseman.

UAW rejects tentative agreement with Volvo Trucks North America

DUBLIN, Va. and DETROIT — Volvo Trucks North America and the United Auto Workers Union (UAW) announced May 16 that UAW has rejected a new five-year labor agreement covering approximately 2,900 employees at Volvo’s New River Valley truck assembly plant in Dublin, Virginia. Initial negotiations began in February. Following an April 17 strike by members of UAW Local #2069 at the Dublin plant, Volvo and UAW reached a tentative agreement on April 30, and the striking employees returned to work. According to UAW, members of UAW Local 2069 will continue working, and will “go back to the bargaining table shortly.” “We look forward to working with the UAW to resolve whatever the outstanding issues are, and we remain confident that we will be able to reach a mutually beneficial agreement,” said Franky Marchand, vice president and general manager of Volvo’s New River Valley plant. Volvo’s New River Valley plant employs more than 3,300 people, about 2,900 of whom are UAW members.

Port trucking company announces collaboration with Nikola to buy 100 zero-emission trucks

PHOENIX — Nikola Corp. is collaborating with Total Transportation Services Inc. (TTSI), a port trucking company, to expedite zero-emission transportation at the port of Los Angeles and Long Beach, the companies announced in early May. The collaboration includes vehicle trials and a letter of intent (LOI) from TTSI to order 100 Nikola Class 8 battery-electric vehicle (BEV) and fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV) semi-trucks. The Nikola Tre BEV is designed for local deliveries up to 350 miles. The Nikola Tre FCEV truck is targeted for distances up to 500 miles and is expected to address most of the North American regional market, especially when additional freight hauling capacity and quick fueling are required by fleet operators. “The Nikola Tre trucks are exactly the type of zero-emission solution we need to be using at the port,” said Vic LaRosa, president of TTSI. “Our trucks operate for 18 to 20 hours a day, making the benefits of the Nikola portfolio a perfect match for our needs. The expected availability of the BEV aligns with our desire to reach our sustainability goals quickly and the FCEV is ideal for longer-range applications. Nikola’s value proposition of the truck and hydrogen fuel bundled together made this partnership even more appealing to our leadership team.” The LOI calls for the purchase of 100 zero-emission trucks, beginning with a four-truck pilot — consisting of two BEVs and two FCEVs — beginning during the first half of 2022. Based on completion of the vehicle trials and subject to TTSI obtaining certain government funding, the purchase of 30 BEVs is projected to follow later in 2022, and delivery of 70 FCEVs is anticipated to start in 2023. “TTSI’s decision to utilize both Nikola BEV and FCEV vehicles speaks to their forward-looking and strategic mindset in covering a variety of hauling distances and loads, while still contributing to California’s clean-air initiatives,” said Michael Erickson, Nikola’s global head of BEV business unit. “We applaud TTSI’s commitment to a zero-emission future and are eager to help fulfill that vision with Nikola zero-emission vehicles.” According to TTSI, in any given month, 13,000 to 14,000 trucks call at the port of Los Angeles and Long Beach, emitting roughly 2,600 tons per year of smog-causing nitrogen-oxide emissions. This location and transportation use case represent one of the largest opportunities in California to make a significant impact for the transition to sustainable transportation. “The drayage and port operations present an excellent use case for BEV and FCEV trucks where operational efficiency cannot be compromised,” said Jason Roycht, Nikola’s global head of FCEV business unit. “We hope to jointly demonstrate with TTSI the advantages of both technologies during vehicle trials at the port of Los Angeles and Long Beach. The planned conversion of the TTSI fleet over the next several years will provide a roadmap to implement zero-emission trucking that we hope many in Southern California will follow.” The collaboration is subject to negotiation and execution of definitive documentation acceptable to the parties.

ADOT has invested $275 million in improvements along I-40 since 2016

PHOENIX — Recognizing the importance of Interstate 40 for commercial trucks and travelers, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has invested $275.2 million in bridge improvements, pavement projects and other safety-related projects along the 360-mile corridor over the past five years. Since 2016, ADOT has replaced pavement on about 90 miles of I-40, which includes rebuilding 5 miles of the interstate in each direction near Williams, and has repaired, upgraded or replaced 35 bridges along the corridor. “We know the value I-40 brings to Arizona as well as the rest of the country and making sure this vital roadway continues to be safe for all motorists is our first priority” said Dallas Hammit, ADOT’s deputy director for transportation. “That’s why we continually invest in extending the life of bridges along the corridor and replacing pavement that gets damaged over years of heavy traffic use and winter weather exposure.” Many of the repaved sections of I-40 have been in the higher-elevation areas between Flagstaff and Williams, which have seen a lot of damage due to winter weather. The Kingman area has seen about 30 miles of I-40 repaved through various projects. Work along the I-40 corridor continues. ADOT is currently replacing pavement along 10 miles of I-40 between I-17 and Walnut Canyon Road and improving 16 more bridges spread out along the interstate from California to New Mexico. Pavement maintenance work continues along the interstate as well. Over the past few years, several bridges along I-40 have had significant upgrades or have been outright replaced using innovative construction methods that save either time or money or both. The bridge slide method of “sliding” a new bridge into place of an old one using hydraulic jacks has been used to replace the Fourth Street bridge in Flagstaff and the Bellemont bridges west of Flagstaff. ADOT also used a fast, cost-effective process to rebuild the bridges on I-40 at Meteor City Road, creating new abutments that integrate into the roadway with a reinforced soil foundation. Both methods cut construction time by months. Other significant bridge improvements include replacing the I-40 bridge decks at the interchange with I-17 in Flagstaff. Bridges and road surfaces aren’t the only things to be improved during the past five years. In an effort to support commerce, ADOT has made improvements to rest areas along I-40, including the Haviland Rest Area west of Kingman and the Painted Cliffs Rest Area near the New Mexico state line. Improvements are currently underway at Meteor Crater Rest Area. Truck parking was permanently expanded by nearly 100 spaces at the Haviland and Meteor Crater rest areas last year. Looking toward the future, ADOT is planning a new traffic interchange between I-40 and U.S. 93 in west Kingman, as well as more pavement replacement projects west of Ash Fork.
