ACT Research: U.S. trailer orders signal improvement

COLUMBUS, Ind. – January net trailer orders, just below 21.3k units, were down 13% from December, but 51% above the level accepted in January 2024, according to this month’s issue of ACT Research’s State of the Industry: U.S. Trailers report. “As noted the past few months, net orders are signaling a move toward ‘better,’ although they haven’t reached ‘good’ yet,” said Jennifer McNealy, director–cv market research & publications at ACT Research. “That said, we caution that the industry remains in the annual period of seasonally stronger order months, so weaker intake months are expected as we move into the late spring and summer months.” Regarding Backlog and Build “For only the third time in more than a year, and for three consecutive months, order intake outpaced build, and by about 7,800 units in January,” McNealy said. “As a result, backlogs expanded more than 9% sequentially. However, backlogs remain sharply lower against 2024’s backdrop. 2024 was a challenging year for the US trailer market, and OEMs see both challenges and opportunities on the horizon for 2025.”

ACT, FTR report preliminary net trailer orders down in January

COLUMBUS, BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Preliminary net trailer orders are down for January compared to December, but are up as compared to January 2024. According ACT Research, preliminary net trailer orders dropped about 3,100 units from December 2024 to January 2025. However, at 21,300 units, were higher compared to January 2024, up more than 51% y/y. FTR is reporting 23,966 trailer orders in January, a decrease from December numbers but 81% higher year-over-year. Strong Order Intake “Though past the traditional peak, we’re still in a period of ‘strong order’ intake,” said Jennifer McNealy, director CV market research & publications at ACT Research. “This month’s pattern of lower than December but still above average demand was expected. It’s also no surprise that the data are higher than the January 2024 intake, given the slowing demand that marked 2023 and led into the subdued market reported throughout most of 2024.” Seasonal adjustment (SA) at this point in the annual order cycle lowers January’s tally to 19,300 units, but that’s about 10% above December’s seasonally adjusted intake, according to ACT. Final January results will be available later this month. This preliminary market estimate is typically within ±5% of the final order tally. “Notwithstanding the improvement thus far in the 2025 order cycle, ACT’s expectations for weak trailer demand relative to recent performance remain, as continuing weak for-hire truck market fundamentals, low used equipment valuations, relatively full dealer inventories, and high interest rates impede stronger activity in the near term,’ McNealy said. “An order uptick showcasing demand, or the lack thereof, depends not just on the first few months of the new order cycle, but on order volumes through Q1’25 and beyond.” Total Trailer Production According to FTR, total trailer production increased by 2% m/m in January to 12,042 units. However, production was down 35% y/y – 46% below the seven-year January average – and was still the second lowest monthly output since 2010. With total trailer net orders significantly outpacing production, backlogs increased by 12,210 units, pushing the backlog/build ratio up to 9.7 months, which is the highest since February 2023. While this higher ratio is largely attributed to exceptionally low production levels, it also suggests easing pressure on OEMs to further scale back production in the near term. “Many fleets continue to prioritize purchasing power units over trailers – a trend unlikely to reverse given the approaching implementation of EPA’s 2027 NOx regulations on trucks,” said Dan Moyer, senior analyst. During the 2025 order season so far, North American Class 8 net orders are up 4% y/y while U.S. trailer net orders are down 21%. Trailer OEMs have scaled back production, and prolonged cuts are possible if demand remains weak. Tariff Troubles “Tariffs threaten further disruption. The 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports planned to take effect next month along with the 10% additional tariff already imposed on Chinese imports and the currently paused but still possible 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports will raise material costs, squeeze margins, and strain supply chains. Tariffs will affect not only fully assembled trailers imported into the U.S. but also domestically produced trailers, which depend on imported materials and components. Expect market volatility as OEMs try to adapt to uncertainty over scope and timing of tariff impacts.”

ACT Research: Softening tractor, strong vocational demand into early 2025

COLUMBUS, Ind. – Continued healthy activity for heavy vocational trucks since September’s order explosion suggests some level of pre-buying has begun, according to ACT Research. “Amid healthy demand, strong build, and already high inventories, the industry’s capacity to sell finished products to end users could well be the limiting factor for production in 2025,” said Kenny Vieth, ACT’s president, senior analyst. Pre-buying The heavy vocational truck pre-buying is on top of strong end market demand as work truck buyers look to get ahead of the EPA’s 2027 Clean Truck regulation and 2028’s ZEV-targeting GHG-3 regulation. While including GHG-3, ACT expects rulemaking will ultimately find its way to the dustbin or otherwise be heavily rewritten, as published in the latest release of the North American Commercial Vehicle OUTLOOK. Tractor Demand “With tractor demand strength more suspect in early 2025, vocational truck production should continue at high levels at the start of the year,” Vieth said. “Vocational build per day rose to a level not seen since 2006, at 513 units per day in November, and blew past that level, to 537 units per day, in December. “Importantly, we note the vocational market’s chokepoint has not been capacity-constrained OEM components, but body-builder capacity constraints,” Vieth said. “While improving, retail sales rates continue to lag build rates, resulting in inventory accumulation throughout last year. Compared to a nearly 120k annualized build rate in recent months, the retail sales rate continued to rise into the end of 2024, averaging a 111k annualized rate in Q4.”

Trucking industry applauds first step towards repealing CARB waivers

WASHINGTON – CARB waivers put into place by the Biden Administration are one step closer to being rolled back. “This is not the United States of California,” said Chris Spear, American Trucking Associations president, CEO. “California should never be given the keys to set national policy and regulate America’s supply chain.” Spear made the statement following the announcement from President Trump and EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin that the  waivers granted to California for its Advanced Clean Trucks and Omnibus NOx rules will now be submitted to Congress for review. “Thanks to the leadership of the Trump Administration, Congress now has one more avenue available to reclaim the keys from Sacramento and restore common sense to our nation’s environmental policies,” Spear said.

Fleetio and FuelMaster join forces to cut fuel costs, prevent fraud

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —  Fleetio is partnering with FuelMaster by Syntech Systems to help fleets track, manage and report on-site fuel usage. “Managing fuel at scale requires precise tracking and monitoring to prevent waste and control costs,” said David Landoch, sales director at Syntech Systems. “By integrating our data with Fleetio, we’re giving these fleets the automated tools they need to make smarter budget decisions and prepare their organizations for success.” High-Cost Resource Fuel is a critical, high-cost resource that directly impacts budgets and service reliability, specifically in industries such as government agencies, schools and large construction operations, which account for 30% of Fleetio’s global customer base. These fleets power essential infrastructure, public services and community operations, making accurate fuel management vital for maintaining uptime and controlling costs. According to a company press release, FuelMaster’s cloud-based system, FMLive, seamlessly syncs fuel transaction data from the pump directly into Fleetio, eliminating manual entry, reducing reporting errors and providing real-time insights into fuel consumption. This integration equips fleet leaders with the tools to monitor usage, prevent fuel loss and make informed decisions that optimize budgets while keeping essential services running efficiently. Why On-Site Fueling Matters On-site fueling offers greater control over fuel costs and usage, especially for fleets with high fuel consumption. By negotiating bulk purchase discounts and maintaining a consistent baseline price, fleets can prevent losses due to price fluctuations and shortages. Automated Data Entry Manual data entry can lead to errors, gaps in budgeting and forecasting and increased vulnerability to fuel fraud, according to the release. Automated data entry and reporting help fleets gain accurate fuel consumption and spend status, reducing the risk of fraudulent activity. “Fleetio’s integration with FuelMaster eliminates the need for manual fuel tracking and reporting tasks by automatically syncing fuel transaction data – including cost, volume, fueling station and odometer reading – directly from FMLive to Fleetio,” the release said. Additional benefits include: Detailed Reporting: Access transaction information for each asset and fueling location for faster reporting of site, tank and cost trends. Fuel Fraud Detection: Identify potential fuel theft with tank capacity alerts in Fleetio, paired with driver and pump access controls in FMLive. Cost Analysis: View fuel costs alongside maintenance data in Fleetio to see impact on total operating cost – including fuel expenses, repair costs, vehicle depreciation and operational inefficiencies – to support budgetary planning. Simplified Forecasting: Procurement teams can more accurately forecast fuel needs with vendors for monthly or quarterly purchasing. “Fuel accounts for 50% of a fleet’s operating budget, and accurate, automated data is essential to effective cost management,” said Wes Wamer, integrations product manager at Fleetio. “Integrating FuelMaster’s capabilities into Fleetio provides a seamless way to monitor fuel consumption and overall operational data. This access in one centralized location optimizes fuel consumption, reduces waste and increases vehicle uptime.”

BeyondTrucks’ latest smart scheduling features takes center stage

SAN FRANSISCO, Calif. — BeyondTrucks is announcing a new embedded smart scheduling features that will empower dispatchers with intelligent tools that bring more efficiency and allow them more time to make complex decisions. “One critical area of trucking operations where traditional TMS platforms have underperformed is scheduling,” said Hans Galland, CEO. “Our virtual scheduling boards have always matched a load planner’s and dispatcher’s natural workflow. Today we’re taking this evolution a step further with three brand new features. With these developments we’re using smart data and AI to create highly intuitive tools that take efficient utilization of drivers and equipment to the next level.” New features of the BeyondTrucks TMS for load planners and dispatchers include: Predictive ETA Learning from every mile driven, this feature considers factors like traffic patterns, road speed and dwell times to generate accurate delivery estimates and automatically alert dispatchers when delays threaten delivery windows. Powered by GPS data for tracking live driver locations, the BeyondTrucks TMS now provides a real-time Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) for loads that enhances dispatch efficiency and customer communication. Smart Duration Display  Using historical data and real-time conditions, the BeyondTrucks TMS now shows precise load durations for custom-defined lanes or based on a fleet’s settings. Bringing a higher level of intelligence, Load Duration Display for Dispatching drives load planning and coordination efficiency that leads to better asset utilization and improved driver satisfaction with more realistic schedules. Dynamic Rate Management  By tracking billable time from first arrival to final departure and allowing fleets to specify exactly when rates apply during a load’s journey, the BeyondTrucks TMS ensures more precise rate calculations and improves billing accuracy. With the new Rate Item Enhancement: Time Reference Configuration feature, fleets can now eliminate revenue leakage and provide transparency that builds customer trust. While traditional TMS solutions digitize basic operations, they fall short in scheduling capabilities, one of the main and most essential aspects of fleet operations. For that reason, many fleet dispatch and load planning operations still use white boards or the calendar function of their email tool. At the same time, dispatchers are continually juggling phone calls and load planners are struggling to optimize routes. “This inefficient and unproductive reality inspired us to transform the fleet scheduling function in our TMS,” Galland said, “These new features are more than just software updates. They’re intelligent tools that empower dispatchers and load planners with efficient and time saving ways to make smarter and more complex decisions for their day-to-day operations. With these capabilities we’re turning fleet management into a science while keeping the human element that makes great dispatchers invaluable.”

Keller Center for Market Insights found that 67% of managers surveyed would consider using VR training, representing significant interest and opportunity for this format. “J. J. Keller’s VR training offers various benefits that set it apart from other VR training,” the release said. “Most notably, it fits seamlessly into J. J. Keller’s existing training ecosystem. Customers can enroll learners in VR courses and track their performance in the J. J. Keller Training solution alongside online E-Learning, streaming video, and classroom program formats.” Integration Across Learning Systems “Many companies that offer VR training don’t integrate it into their learning management system, making it impossible for customers who use multiple training formats to keep all their recordkeeping centralized on one platform,” the release said. Customers can also use J. J. Keller’s standard training enrollments on VR training. This is the same type of enrollment used on J. J. Keller’s other training formats. There is no need to purchase any kind of special enrollment at an increased price to enroll learners in VR courses. Other key advantages to VR training include: Improved Engagement & Retention: VR programs offer a more engaging, immersive training experience that increases the likelihood of employees applying their knowledge and skills in the “real world.” “Freedom to Fail”: By navigating dangerous situations in a virtual environment, learners can make mistakes safely while still feeling as though the consequences are real. Convenience: On-the-go or remote employees may rarely be onsite. VR training ensures employees receive the instruction they need, regardless of their location. Cost-Effectiveness: No need to fly professional trainers in for training sessions. Virtual programs provide exceptional training while keeping costs down. At launch, J. J. Keller offers 16 VR training programs: Workplace Safety & Health Arc Flash (Flashover) Confined Space Entry Electrical Safety Fire Safety (The Office) Hazard Recognition – Warehouse Hot Work Ladder Safety Lockout/Tagout Trenching and Excavation Safety Transportation Brake System: Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection Engine and Front Axle: Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection In-Vehicle: Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection Lights: Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection Walk-Around: Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection Road Safety Traffic Accident With Dangerous Goods Human Resources Active Shooter Response Training for Civilians (Office) Future Courses J. Lytx introducing new driver recognition tools to highlight driver achievements

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Lytx Inc. is announcing two new features that help make it easier for fleet managers to recognize and reward top performing drivers. “I love these features,” said Charles Rockwell, safety Manager at JBS Carriers Inc. “They make it easy for me to see which of our drivers are qualified and performing well. Sure, pay is important for drivers. But communication, respect, and proper recognition are right up there, too. This aligns with our values and how we coach our drivers to maintain safe driving habits.” Lytx Driver Safety Program According to a company press release, the new features will be available in the Lytx Driver Safety Program and are part of a suite of safety recognition tools that Lytx will deliver throughout 2025 as part of its 27-year commitment to driver safety and excellence. The Safe Driving Report highlights drivers with the best safety performances, allowing managers to quickly identify and recognize top drivers with just a few clicks, saving them valuable time. Managers can sort and group by miles driven to customize their recognition programs. A recognition history keeps track of which drivers have received recognition, helping managers ensure all safe drivers in their fleet are acknowledged. Later this year, Lytx will release safety badges to help fleets recognize drivers for specific achievements, allowing companies to further customize their safety programs to focus on specific areas, such as safe following distance or following the speed limit. Safe Driving Trend Dashboard With the Safe Driving Trend Dashboard, fleet and safety managers can monitor fleet safety performance at a glance, the release said. Managers can tailor metrics such as mileage thresholds and see what percentage of drivers have met or exceeded their goals by quarter. Retaining Top Performers In a relatively tight labor market, retaining top performing talent is a priority for many companies. In 2023, turnover rates for construction workers hit 54%, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Trade, transportation, and utilities saw a 49% turnover in the same period. Replacing each worker can cost 50% to 200% of the employee’s annual salary. “Drivers and technicians are the heart of every fleet,” said Brendon Hill, senior vice president of product. “From day one, Lytx has prioritized driver safety, with an emphasis on seeing the driver holistically. For us, safety is more than just an app. It’s about building the tools and operational support needed to ensure every journey ends with a safe return. That means taking every opportunity to reinforce safe driving habits and recognize drivers who contribute to the safety of our roads and our communities.”

A purr-fect fit: Pet Valu adds two Volvo VNR Electric trucks to its fleet

Volvo Trucks North America customer, Pet Valu, is adding two Volvo VNR Electric trucks to its fleet as part of the company’s ongoing supply chain transformation. Pet Valu is a Canadian specialty retailer of pet food and pet-related supplies. The zero-tailpipe emission trucks will help the company achieve its vision of building Canada’s strongest pet specialty distribution network.  “We are excited to see Pet Valu taking the initiative in the Canadian pet supply industry by adopting Volvo’s VNR Electric trucks,” said Matthew Blackman, managing director for Canada, Volvo Trucks North America.  “As they venture into sustainable transportation, this effort is expected to not only strengthen their supply chain but also help support a healthier planet, one ‘purr-fectly’ quiet kilometer at a time.” Sustainable Transportation The two Volvo VNR Electric trucks will operate from Pet Valu’s new 350,000-square-foot LEED-Gold certified distribution center. The battery-electric trucks are expected to play an important role in its pursuit to optimize its energy efficiency and emissions management. The trucks will deliver pet food and supplies to the Pet Valu family of stores, including Pet Valu, Bosley’s by Pet Valu, Total Pet and Tisol throughout British Columbia five days a week, traveling an average of 300 kilometers (186 miles) per day. Each of Pet Valu’s new Class 8 Volvo VNR Electric day cabs is equipped with a six-battery pack configuration, providing a range of up to 442 kilometers (275 miles) per charge. The trucks will be charged overnight at the Surrey distribution center using two newly installed 120kW chargers. Better Driver Experience According to a press release, the near-silent operation of the Volvo VNR Electric trucks provides drivers with a more comfortable driving experience while also reducing noise pollution in local communities. This is especially beneficial for early morning or late evening deliveries to urban and regional deliveries, ensuring a community-friendly solution. “At Pet Valu, we are committed to continuously improving how we serve devoted pet lovers and their pets,” said Nico Weidel, chief supply chain officer, Pet Valu. “Each electric delivery truck represents an opportunity to avoid consuming over 25,000 litres of diesel fuel or over 62 tonnes of CO2e per year. We’re excited to explore how these trucks perform and assess the potential for further electrification of our delivery fleet in the future.” Perfect Pairing In addition to deploying the trucks, Pet Valu worked closely with the Volvo Trucks sales team to identify and secure funding opportunities that partially offset the cost of the vehicles and charging infrastructure. Pet Valu utilized federal and provincial incentive programs, including Clean BC – Go Electric and iMHZEV (Incentives for Medium- and Heavy-Duty Zero-Emission Vehicles), to support the adoption of these battery-electric trucks. The company may also be eligible for carbon credits based on fuel savings and yearly mileage, making this transition even more impactful for their business.
