Decisiv drives intelligent service management with fleet focused solutions

Berylls Strategy Advisors examines the impact of electrified trucks for decarbonizing the U.S. trucking industry

DETROIT — Trucking is a sector that is difficult to decarbonize, and 40% of global road transportation emissions comes from trucking. The average carbon footprint per truck is 50 times higher compared to passenger vehicles, and as C02 taxes rise and bans on diesel trucks in urban areas continue, Berylls Strategy Advisors, a global management consulting firm fully focused on the automobility industry, has investigated the U.S. trucking market and today issued a Berylls Insights Report, “Zero-Emission Trucking in the U.S. – Will Batteries do the Job?” The paper investigates the U.S. truck market, vehicle deployment, applications and technologies to determine if battery electric trucks are the universal solution for decarbonization of the trucking sector. While current manufacturers have been sluggish to introduce zero-emission trucks, investors are bullish about electrified commercial vehicles and funding for startups is readily available (the number of zero-emission truck models available in the U.S. jumped from 20 in 2019 to 145 today). While the number of products available coupled with government incentives impacts adaptation, vehicle range and annual mileage continue to be the main factors that determine the technical and economic feasibility of battery electric trucks compared to other powertrain technology for fleets. All manufacturers have announced electric truck ranges between 150 and 200 miles, and according to the North American Council on Freight Efficiency (NACFE), 98 percent of Class 3 – 6 trucks do not travel more than 150 miles daily. Consequently, these lighter segments can be electrified more easily and without the need for public fast charging infrastructure. Class 3 promises the highest overall market volumes – between 300,000-350,000 annually. Comparatively, the heavy-duty truck market is more volatile with a volume of 200,000-300,000 units annually. These vehicles require high payloads and range requirements, meaning heavier and more expensive batteries. One-hundred miles of extra vehicle range cost 2,500 pounds of payload and an additional $20,000 for the battery, making the investment cost and payload penalty of a larger battery simply too high to justify the total cost of ownership. “Our insight shows that battery electric trucks can be competitive, but not for all use cases,” said Martin French, Berylls U.S. managing director. “There will be a pluralism of powertrain solutions and any truck purchase will be preceded by carefully weighing the importance of technical fit as well as capital and operational expenditures.”

Noodoe EV charging stations now CALeVIP compliant/rebate ready

WYDOT announces strategy for National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure funding

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Wyoming will soon receive National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) formula funds to use to facilitate electric vehicle infrastructure development, especially charging stations, around the state. The funding is part of the Federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, also known as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) signed by President Joe Biden in November 2021. The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is allocated $3.9 million this year and expects $5 million each year for the next four years for a total of $23.96 million for EV infrastructure over five years. In preparation to execute NEVI funding and other program incentives, the state has developed a Zero Emission Vehicle Strategy and will circulate the strategy over the next month to allow the public and interested parties to provide comments and feedback. “These stations will not only be powered by Wyoming energy, but will help facilitate tourism around the state,” Director Luke Reiner said. “We want drivers who choose EVs to have safe and reliable ways to charge their vehicles as they drive in our state. This has been an inter-agency effort to maximize available resources for our residents and visitors.” Wyoming’s interstates have been designated as “Alternative Fuel Corridors” and under the NEVI program must have infrastructure installed first. Corridor infrastructure must adhere to guidelines set by the NEVI Program Joint Office for charger efficiency, location, and accessibility. Once the interstate corridors are complete, remaining funding can be spent along other key routes to popular destinations like Yellowstone National Park and Devil’s Tower National Monument. No state funds will be used to build, maintain or operate EV charging infrastructure through the NEVI program. Instead, the company who bids on the corridor will pay the required match amount to the Federal funds. In addition to the NEVI funding, the BIL outlined $2.5 billion in discretionary grants available to eligible applicants, including state and local governments, special purpose districts, tribes and other groups or entities. The state also has VW settlement funds that will be used to provide additional funding for EV infrastructure development in areas not along the alternative fuel corridors. WYDOT and other state officials have scheduled public meetings around the state in early April to gather public input as well as feedback from potential bidders and other interested parties. Each meeting is expected to have a virtual component so viewers can attend any meeting and see the proposed plan and make comments. Webasto’s introduces two new SmarTemp 3.0 controllers

FENTON, Mich. — Webasto North America announced the introduction of its new SmarTemp 3.0 and SmarTemp 3.0 Bluetooth controllers Tuesday. The new devices control both Webasto fuel-operated air heaters and fuel-operated coolant heaters, all from a single unit. The SmarTemp 3.0, part number 5013873A, and SmarTemp 3.0 Bluetooth, part number 5013874A, will be displayed to the industry for the first time in the Webasto booth, No. 11228, at the Mid-America Trucking Show, from March 24-26, in Louisville, Kentucky. Initially introduced in 2013, the compact, all-in-one temperature management system became popular among fleets and owner-operators alike. Like their predecessor, the rotary dials of the SmarTemp 3.0 and SmarTemp 3.0 Bluetooth Controls allow air heater users to dial in the temperature they desire, and the device does the rest. Standard comfort adjustments are as easy as turning the dial right for higher temperatures and left for lower temperatures. ZF collaborates with C.R. England to transition fleet to new brake technology

NORTHVILLE, Mich. – ZF announced that C.R. England will transition its entire fleet of 4,000 Freightliner and International trucks to MAXXUSTM L2.0 Air Disc Brakes. The company expects all vehicles to be converted by 2024. “For 50-plus years, C.R. England has been a valued customer and we’re excited to expand this partnership to improve the performance and efficiency of their fleet,” Julien Plenchette, senior vice president of Americas of Commercial Vehicle Solutions division at ZF Group, said. “We are working with C.R. England toward a common goal to achieve zero accidents and leverage technology to help keep roads safe.” MAXXUS L2.0 officials tout that their product “offers ease of maintenance and improved performance, in addition to being the lightest truck air disc brake (ADB) on the North American market at 67 pounds.” As the single-piston ADB pioneer, MAXXUS L2.0 has fewer parts than double-piston designs and can therefore reduce complexity and lead to faster, easier maintenance, according to a company news release. Drum brakes experience reduced performance in certain applications, notably downhill situations that can cause a reduction of friction material traction. MAXXUS L2.0’s adjuster mechanism is designed to continuously adapt to maintain an optimal running clearance – even in extreme conditions – helping to provide stable and consistent performance. “WABCO MAXXUS L2.0 Air Disc Brakes allow C.R. Maryland teams with electric vehicle charging firm

BOWIE, Md. — SemaConnect, a provider of electric vehicle charging amenities to the North American commercial, residential and fleet markets, recently announced a new statewide intergovernmental cooperative purchasing agreement (ICPA) with the State of Maryland for electric vehicle charging stations and equipment. The new ICPA contract streamlines the purchasing process for the state and other eligible government entities who are looking for new workplace, public and fleet EV charging stations, according to a company news release. ACT Research: Despite economic uncertainty, North American CV markets at status quo levels

COLUMBUS, Ind. – According to ACT Research’s latest State of the Industry: NA (North American) Classes 5-8 Report, while the economic set-up remains favorable, considerable friction and uncertainty have been added, with many more loose ends in the economic story than there were a month ago. ACT’s State of the Industry: NA Classes 5-8 report provides a monthly look at the current production, sales, and general state of the on-road heavy and medium duty commercial vehicle markets in North America. It differentiates market indicators by Class 5, Classes 6-7 chassis and Class 8 trucks and tractors, detailing measures such as backlog, build, inventory, new orders, cancellations, net orders and retail sales. Additionally, Class 5 and Classes 6-7 are segmented by trucks, buses, RVs and step van configurations, while Class 8 is segmented by trucks and tractors with and without sleeper cabs. This report includes a six-month industry build plan, backlog timing analysis, historical data from 1996 to the present in spreadsheet format, and a ready-to-use graph package. A first look at preliminary net orders is also published in conjunction with this report. “Despite the economic uncertainty and considerable inflationary friction, North American commercial vehicle markets continue to perform at status quo levels.” according to Kenny Vieth, ACT Research’s president and senior analyst. “Persistent supply-chain constraints are still limiting the industry’s ability to raise production levels to align with demand. As a result, backlogs remain long, and order volumes remain constrained due to ‘within 12 months’ order reporting ground rules. Until build rates find traction, orders are expected to largely mirror production levels. It’s also important to remember that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine did not occur until Feb. 24. Hence, we do not believe there is any impact on February’s market statistics.” “After high-side beats in December and January, Class 8 production moderated to in-line with expectations in February. Classes 5-7 build stayed choppy, with a rebound to trend build rates in February, after sharply lower production activity in January,” Veith said.

Navistar standardizes factory-installed telematics device on all Class 6-8 vehicles

LISLE, Ill. – Navistar has standardized its factory-installed telematics devices on all new builds of the complete Class 6-8 International Truck and IC Bus vehicles, including electric models. This standardization allows access to actionable vehicle data, enhanced capabilities with industry partners and further improved integration for upfitting capabilities with truck equipment manufacturers. The factory-installed and warranted telematics device broadcasts data to OnCommand Connection, Navistar’s connected services platform, which aggregates vehicle health and performance data and turns that into actionable information. Haldex signs agreement with KRONE for new trailer braking system

WEYERSHEIM, France — Haldex has signed a long-term agreement with KRONE Commercial Vehicle Group for the supply of the fourth generation Electronic Brake System (EBS) platform for trailers. The new generation EBS, the EB+4.0, brings parking brake control into electronic management and offers a new modular and customizable approach to customer-specific functions. “With this product offer, Haldex contributes to improved road safety and an increased level of digitalization of the industry,” a news release stated. “As a multi-voltage platform that can be used as both ABS and EBS, and with a significant weight reduction and an estimated CO2 footprint reduction of up to 30% compared to the previous generation, this new platform is aligned to market needs.” Stephan Kulle, executive vice president EMEA, said that with the agreement, Haldex “has taken a step forward to extend our position within the trailer market. Our collaboration with KRONE is developing at a new promising stage, which strengthens the confidence in our ability to continue innovating to meet market needs and exceed customer expectations.”  

New Mexico governor sets sights on building hydrogen economy

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham took another step Thursday to put New Mexico on the hydrogen map, signing an executive order she said will help establish a roadmap making clear that hydrogen will be a key focus of the state as it works to transform its energy economy. The Democratic governor said she hopes the order will provide predictability for businesses and hopefully result in more of them choosing to relocate to New Mexico. The order directs members of her cabinet to work together in pursuing opportunities for building a “green” hydrogen economy. It also calls for hydrogen to be included as a key sector for the state Economic Development Department. “I want this priority to get the attention it deserves over the coming days, weeks and months,” Lujan Grisham said. The state also is working on developing recommendations for the federal government as part of an effort by Rocky Mountain states to developing ways to make hydrogen more available and useful as clean-burning fuel for cars, trucks and trains. Lujan Grisham said there also are opportunities when it comes to aviation as she announced a $254 million investment by Universal Hydrogen Co. to build a manufacturing center in Albuquerque that will support its plans to retrofit and fuel planes with hydrogen. The company has developed proprietary storage capsules that could be shipped from hydrogen production facilities to airports, where they could be loaded directly onto aircraft that have been retrofitted with hydrogen-specific powertrains. New Mexico is pledging $10 million in local economic development funds for the project, and the city of Albuquerque is considering providing additional funding. Jon Gordon, co-founder and general counsel for Universal Hydrogen, said the company has agreements with 11 carriers to retrofit nearly 100 regional turboprop planes with a goal of being FAA-certified and in commercial service by 2025. Gordon told reporters there’s also potential for developing modular fueling systems for larger commercial airplanes as well as drones, industrial equipment and ground transportation. Still, he called it a “chicken and egg problem,” explaining that the hydrogen market is in its infancy. Hydrogen can be derived from water using an electric current and when burned emits only water vapor as a byproduct. Advocates have said the fuel could theoretically reduce greenhouse emissions and air pollution, depending on how it’s obtained. Critics argue that as it’s now produced, hydrogen isn’t green, carbon-free or unlimited. Currently nearly all hydrogen commercially produced in the U.S. comes not from water but natural gas, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. That debate hit a boiling point during the recent New Mexico legislative session, as environmentalists lobbied against several proposed incentives. Lujan Grisham acknowledged their concerns Thursday. “I would guess that there’s not a single person in this room that doesn’t wish that we don’t need a transition of any kind, that it would be very easy if the technology and innovations were immediate. They’re not,” she said, adding that her administration will continue trying to attract companies with “the lowest carbon intensity possible.

Wilson logistics recommits to Locomation’s autonomous trucking solution

PITTSBURGH — Autonomous truck company Locomation announced Thursday that Wilson Logistics has recommitted to deploy 1,120 Autonomous Relay ConvoySM units in its flagship fleet in the mid and south-central United States. The original plan, announced in March 2020 at the Truckload Carriers Association annual conference, was for the 1,120 ARC units to be deployed in Wilson Logistics’ West Coast trucking operation, but that operation, and its assets, was sold late last year to Ashley Pacific Northwest, LLC, a subsidiary of Ashley Distribution Services, LTD. With that divestiture complete, Wilson Logistics now turns its focus to deploying its autonomous truck service in the Midwest from its Springfield, Missouri and Dallas-Fort Worth hubs. The parties have been engineering six freight lanes, valued at $524 million in annual revenue and an estimated $112 million in operating profit, for the high rates of asset utilization and operational efficiency expected from Locomation’s autonomous trucking system. “Since choosing Locomation we have studied these lanes and everything that goes into producing a high-utilization, reduced-GHG-emissions autonomous trucking operation for the shippers we serve,” Darrel Wilson, founder and CEO of Wilson Logistics, said. “Locomation’s Autonomous Relay NetworkSM, analytics, systems and algorithms give us an exceptional understanding of where the margins are and how best to harvest them moving forward. We knew from the start that this was a relationship we wanted to go deeper and further with.” Locomation’s ARC system is a human-led convoy of two trucks that are electronically tethered.
